CURRENT MLW UNDERGROUND REELZ RUN ENDING NEXT WEEK WITH 'SEASON FINALE'

By Mike Johnson on 2023-04-25 23:08:00

Major League Wrestling's Tuesday night run on REELZ will be coming to an end, at least for now.

After tonight's Battle Riot V broadcast, MLW Underground is only scheduled for one more episode in its current REELZ timeslot of 10 PM Eastern on Tuesdays.  PWInsider.com is told by MLW sources that the 5/2 episode is being approached as a "season finale" and that talks are underway for what has been described as a "second season."

Starting Tuesday 5/9, the time slot for MLW is currently scheduled to be filled with reruns of reality series Jail.

MLW premiered on REELZ on 2/7, airing a two hour block of programming.  The first hour was original, new content, followed by an hour of MLW Fusion from MLW's archives.    At the time, MLW touted it as a new era for the promotion, as REELZ had given them their first true national cable home.

However, entertainment trade publication Variety, when reporting that REELZ had signed a deal with NBCU's streaming service Peacock deal to add a REELZ streaming channel to the service on 2/28, noted that Major League Wrestling Underground would not be included on the REELZ feed due to WWE's exclusivity on Peacock.  The publication also noted that that MLW's run on REELZ "wraps up after 10 weeks, making Reelz’s Tuesday 10 p.m. linear offerings available after that."

The 5/2 broadcast would be the 13th MLW Underground episode on REELZ.  5/9 would be exactly ten weeks out from that Variety report.

In the wake of the Variety report, REELZ issued the following statement to PWInsider.com: "No decisions have been made by MLW or REELZ and we are both committed to a good outcome for MLW, its fans and REELZ."

We are told by MLW sources that the idea going forward would be MLW as a seasonal series, similar to Lucha Underground during its time on The El Rey Network.

As we have noted in the Elite section, the next MLW date is 7/8 at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia and is likely to be a PPV broadcast of some kind.
