NATHAN JONES SACKING, TEAM VAR MISTAKES AND MANCHESTER CITY'S PROBLEMS

By Kendall Jenkins on 2023-02-16 08:31:00

The English Premier League is now in full swing, and we see The Gunners continue to stumble in the championship race. However, the nearest rival Manchester City is far from its best form today. Finally, news has come from Southampton that their head coach Nathan Jones has been sacked by the club's management due to a series of poor matches. On the other hand, all these unexpected events and intrigues make the EPL so exciting and interesting for football fans, as well as those who like to bet on sports, which is supported by websites and casinos that accept Neosurf with a sportsbook section available. And while it is still difficult to make predictions about which team will win the main trophy, let's take a look at the latest big news regarding English club football.

Nathan Jones Sacked After 14 Games

Appointed as Southampton manager in November 2022 and replacing Ralph Hasenhuttl, Jones has suffered eight setbacks from eight responsible games with only one win against Everton coming back in January. The Saints' management had no option but to sack Jones, and that happened despite his 3.5-year contract. The final straw was the home defeat against Wolverhampton where The Wanderers were able to pull out a win from being down on the pitch. Disappointed by the embarrassing loss, Jones went straight into the tunnel after the referee's whistle.

While the Wolves brought in Julen Lopetegui as manager, the Saints made a bid for Jones, who was not a well-known figure. Three months later, Wolverhampton has managed to climb out of the bottom and consolidate a comfortable 15th place in the standings. As for Southampton, the team suffered a series of setbacks. Led by Nathan Jones, the Saints started scoring less and conceding more as the head coach's style proved to be very erratic and inconsistent, and that confused the young athletes. A constantly changing squad and blatantly poor management are the things that have ruined Jones. However, the Saints have 16 more games to try and rectify a very unpleasant situation for them.

Brentford Evened by VAR Mistake

Another VAR negligence scandal took place at Stockley Park where Brentford faced major trophy challengers Arsenal. While scoring against Arsenal, the VAR team, led by the scandalous Lee Mason, did not check the episode late in the attacking phase. The thing is that Christian Norgaard, who gave a goal pass to Ivan Toney, got caught offside which was not noticed by VAR. As a result, Arsenal has lost another two vital points on their way to the league title.

After a post-match review by the experts, it became clear that VAR had not drawn the line in the episode where Norgaard passed the ball to Toney. Had the VAR team done their job in good faith, that goal would not have been counted. According to referee expert Chris Foy, it was a clear human error and it affected the final result. Mikel Arteta also gave his comment stating that there was a clear offside and no one could immediately explain to him why the goal was counted.

Manchester City Worse Than in Recent Seasons

With 45 points and sitting second in the standings, Manchester City are causing some concern to experts and fans alike. Although the current result looks solid, The Citizens have set high standards for themselves in recent years, and this season they need to live up to them. After 21 games, Guardiola's side has eight points less than after the same number of games last season. Far more worrying are their three straight-away defeats in all competitions, and that could be a sign of decline.

Commenting on the recent defeat to Tottenham, Gary Neville said there was something wrong with the team. They definitely need to move on to compete successfully with Arsenal for the league title. The unexpected departure of high-profile defender Joao Cancelo on loan as well as the whole team's desire to pass on Erling Haaland look strange, to say the least. Until recently, one of the most consistent teams in the English Premier League, Manchester City has become very unpredictable on the pitch. The statistics with zero shots and zero touches in the penalty box against Tottenham indicate a downturn for Erling Haaland, and this is despite the fact that the championship race is moving into the decisive stage.
