How can WWE suspend independent contractors?

If those independent contractors agreed to the fact they could be suspended for violating their contract by signing their contract, WWE has the right to do so unless it's challenged in court and struck down legally.  That's a LONG, expensive process.

Could this all be a work?

It didn't start out that way, but all it takes is one phone call or meeting for everyone to get on the same page again and then they weave a storyline.  We haven't heard that is the case with this situation.

If Naomi and Sasha Banks leave, do they get to take their ring names?

Not likely, as the ring names were created and first used when they were working for WWE.  That would mean they fall under WWE's intellectual property umbrella and talents sign that they understand anything created during their time with WWE falls under WWE's auspices when they sign their deals.  So, again, not likely.

Could WWE prevent Sasha Banks from doing more Star Wars if she's suspended?

No, her Star Wars role had nothing to do with WWE.  She booked that outside of the company and if Lucasfilm wanted her to film something today, she could be on set as soon as she could get to California.  WWE doesn't control that aspect of her career.

Why would WWE pull their merchandise?  Even if they were suspended, the company can still make money selling it online.

Yes, but then they'd have to pay Naomi and Banks royalties.  I think the idea here is that WWE is shutting off the valve and the flow of money to the talents because they are "suspended."

What do you think WWE does next?

Nothing.  Unless they intend to file a breach of contract claim, my guess is WWE does nothing and this goes one of two ways - a cold war where the two sides ignore each other until contracts expire or eventually, things cool over and one or both of them opt to return to work.

How can they have a tournament with so few talents on the women's roster?

You can have a tournament with four teams.  You can do a round robin deal.  You can bring in WWE NXT talents.  There are ways to do it.
