NEW JAPAN AT THE GARDEN, BEACH BREAK IN CLEVELAND, THE RUMBLE, THE NEW YORK COMMISSION AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2022-01-27 10:00:00

Why did AEW do a Beach Break in a place with no beach?

Why did WWE did a WWE One Night Stand with no ECW?  It's pro wrestling!    Plus, there are beaches in Cleveland.  It's JUST COLD RIGHT NOW.

Has WWE ever thought about doing a Royal Rumble made up of just Rumble winners?

I cannot say I have ever heard of such a thing, but if they hadn't thought of it, you just gave them the ide.a.

Any word on New Japan Pro Wrestling finally running the Wrestle Dynasty event in MSG?

I have heard nothing about this and currently, MSG doesn't have anything internally on the books for an event.  MY belief is that until we truly get past COVID-19, if that ever happens, we won't see New Japan try to bring over a massive troup of talents for anything here in the United States.

I saw you wrote about the underage kid who wasn't allowed to wrestle in NYC for GCW, but when I looked up results, he had wrestled in NYC before.  So, between you saying there's no real rule and the fact he had wrestled in New York before, what the hell is up with the New York State Athletic Commission?

Your guess is as good as mine.  I can tell you that when the late, great Billy Caputo, who used to referee before joining the Commission, was around, he would work with the promotions to make sure everyone could put together the best show they could within the parameters of the law.

Since Caputo sadly passed and New York State began overseeing MMA, there's no rhyme or reason for why certain rules are enforces, especially since it literally states in the By-Laws that professional wrestling is NOT considered a competitive sport in New York.

I can also assure you that, for example, if WWE wants to break a table in Madison Square Garden, there isn't an issue but if others want to do so, it's been a problem.  Why did they give Nick Wayne an issue?  They decided on that date it was an issue, even if it hadn't been an issue before and even though his parents were there.

I don't believe those under 18 should be in the ring personally, but given the rules on the books, it was stupid to penalize him for a rule that doesn't technically exist.    Unfortunately, the Commission gets to have that power and get their piece of the live gate but in my opinion, they should be overseeing and clearing talents medically and that's it.   There is zero reason for them to have any say in the creative side of a show - and it should be noted that the Commission rep at GCW has stopped matches for no reason on independent shows in the past, so as I have written in the past, a lot of it also depends on which Commission rep is assigned to a show.  It's the difference between an easy night and a massive headache.

Whatever happened to that monster movie Becky and Roman were supposed to star in?

I think you are referring to the animated film Rumble.  It's streaming on Paramount+
