TRADEMARK FILING FOR WALTER'S NEW RING NAME LEADS TO LOTS OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA

By Mike Johnson on 2022-01-19 17:35:00

WWE is getting a lot of mainstream attention for the worst reason possible, in that the originally trademarked name for Gunther, the fomer WALTER, is Gunther Stark, a name that coincidentally was shared by a former German Nazi U-Boat commander in World War II.

While WWE has not moved forward with the last name on their programming (and now never will), the trademark filing shows that was at, one point, the original plan.   The UK Sun, Sports Illustrated and other outlets have covered the boneheaded idea and the negative fan response to it.  How there was no process in place to check the name and any potential issues before moving forward with the trademark seems insane.

Believe it or not, this is not the first example of such a thing as WWE NXT star Tony D'Angelo shares his name with Tony DeAngelo of the NHL, who came with his own troubled history.
