TOP MATCHES SET FOR AAA TRIPLEMANIA, KENNY OMEGA, CAIN VELASQUEZ AND MORE

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide has announced All Elite Wrestling megastar Kenny Omega will attempt his sixth defense of the AAA Mega Championship against El Hijo del Vikingo at its Triplemanía Regia show on December 4 in the Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey baseball stadium.

The origin of the match dates back to Triplemanía XXVIII last December, when Omega nominated the extraordinary young luchador as his next challenger for the title.

Instead, Andrade challenged Omega for the title at Triplemanía XXIX in August. The match made international headlines after Ric Flair made a shock appearance to accompany Andrade to the ring.

Vikingo used Omega’s Croyt’s Wrath move off the second rope onto Látigo at AAA’s Verano de Escándalo show in July. Omega compared Vikingo to AEW star Jungle Boy, who Omega had successfully defended the AEW World Championship against on the June 26 episode of Dynamite, saying he also wants to crush Vikingo’s future.

“The balance and core strength this takes is incredible. With a little more raw power, he could have done it just as good as me. I’ve said [El Hijo del Vikingo] is one of the best for a reason. Much like with Jungle Boy in AEW, I want to crush your future too,” Omega posted.

At the first Triplemanía Regia show in 2019, Omega made his second successful defense of the AAA Mega Championship against Dragon Lee. Two years later, the Ring of Honor star is set to make his in-ring return to the company at this year’s Triplemanía Regia.

He will team with his brother Dralístico, who recently departed Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. Their team name is Hermanos Lee.

Fénix and Pentagón Jr. have also been confirmed to appear. The Lucha Brothers just lost the AAA World Tag Team Championships to Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood on the October 16 episode of Dynamite under dubious circumstances, so one could expect the former champions to get a rematch at some point in the near future.

Lee is not the only star slated to return to AAA at the show, as mixed martial arts legend and former WWE superstar Cain Velasquez will also make his return to AAA at Triplemanía Regia, teaming with Pagano and Psycho Clown against Rey Escorpión, Taurus and a mystery partner.

Velasquez wrestled two matches with AAA in 2019 and was highly sought after by AEW, New Japan Pro Wrestling and WWE.

Velasquez, who amassed a 14-3 record in MMA and notably defeated Brock Lesnar to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship at Ultimate Fighting Championship’s UFC 121 event in 2010, ultimately signed a three-year deal with WWE in 2019 but was released last April.

On October 4, 2019, Velasquez made his WWE debut on the first episode of SmackDown on the Fox network to confront his old foe Lesnar. He later unsuccessfully challenged Lesnar for the WWE Championship at Crown Jewel on October 31, 2019, in Saudi Arabia.

Velasquez wrestled his second and final match in WWE teaming with Humberto Carrillo to defeat Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows (now known as Doc Gallows) at an untelevised house show on November 30, 2019, in Mexico.

He will make his in-ring return at an independent wrestling show on November 13 in Phoenix, Arizona, before turning to AAA. Velasquez will team with lucha libre Blue Demon Jr. against fellow UFC alumni Dan Severn and Mariachi Loco. Tickets for the show, titled Lucha Loco Libre, are available here. There will be eight other matches on the card.
