CAIN VELASQUEZ TO MAKE INDEPENDENT WRESTLING DEBUT NEXT MONTH

By Mike Johnson on 2021-10-13 18:11:00

Mixed martial arts legend and former WWE superstar Cain Velasquez is set to make his wrestling return at an independent wrestling show on November 13 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Velasquez will team with lucha libre Blue Demon Jr. against fellow Ultimate Fighting Championship alumni Dan Severn and Mariachi Loco.

Tickets for the show, titled Lucha Loco Libre, are available here. There will be eight other matches on the card.

Velasquez, who amassed a 14-3 record in MMA and notably defeated Brock Lesnar to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 121 event in 2010, signed a three-year deal with WWE in 2019 but was released last April.

On October 4, 2019, Velasquez made his WWE debut on the first episode of SmackDown on the Fox network to confront his old foe Lesnar. He later unsuccessfully challenged Lesnar for the WWE Championship at Crown Jewel on October 31, 2019, in Saudi Arabia.

Velasquez wrestled his second and final match in WWE teaming with Humberto Carrillo to defeat Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows (now known as Doc Gallows) at an untelevised house show on November 30, 2019, in Mexico.

Velasquez wrestled two matches in AAA in 2019 prior to signing with WWE, notably teaming with All Elite Wrestling executive vice president Cody and Psycho Clown to defeat Killer Kross (now known as Karrion Kross), Taurus and Texano Jr. at Triplemanía XXVII.

A month after Triplemanía XXVII (and a month prior to his eventual WWE debut), Velasquez revealed that in addition to WWE, he had held talks with Cody Rhodes regarding joining All Elite Wrestling during an interview with Ariel Helwani.

ESPN’s Marc Raimondi also reported Velasquez would hold an informal meeting with New Japan Pro Wrestling officials after attending the company’s Super J Cup show in San Francisco in August 2019.

Velasquez is set to return to AAA in December, which he first revealed on the In This Corner with Cyrus Fees podcast in July.
