MORE WWE MSG NOTES

By Mike Johnson on 2021-09-10 23:19:00

Vince McMahon was in attendance and running the Smackdown taping tonight in New York City

Despite being a big part of the media promotion for tonight's WWE return to Madison Square Garden and the timing of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Zelina Vega did not perform on the show, which sounds ridiculously wrong.

John Pollock of POSTWrestling.com reported the following:

Vega posted the following photos of the gear she didn't get to use tonight, which featured a tribute to her father, who died during the 9/11 attacks:

Edge was pretty emotional for his first match back in Madison Square Garden in years and during a commercial break after his entrance, got down on his hands and knees and kissed the mat.

During that same commercial break, Pat McAfee got on top of the announce table and cut a promo putting over NYC and calling those who committed 9/11 "a**holes."  He's not wrong there.

WWE officially announced a sellout of 14,425 for the event.

WWE President Nick Khan was on the floor all night talking with fans.  He and Stephanie McMahon were also greeting fans before the show in MSG'S Delta Club.

The advertised Bianca Belair vs. Becky Lynch dark match did not take place.

Although local advertising for the MSG event switched from The Mysterios to The Street Profits teaming with John Cena, the day of the show, it was The Mysterios teaming with Cena.

Peter Rosenberg and author Keith Elliot Greenberg were in attendance.

Madison Square Garden gave out personalized gift boxes to the talents to welcome them home :

One of the EMTs helping Edge was WrestlePro regular Aaron Rourke.

Backstage at the taping were former Impact Wrestling star Kevin Matthews and The Tate Twins aka Dalton Castle's Boys from ROH years ago, who are now regulars in OVW.

There was a strict "no visitors" policy for tonight's taping.

The advertising for the 12/26 WWE return was not brand specific.
