MATT RIDDLE LAWSUIT, BB KINGS IN NYC AS A WRESTLING VENUE, THE ONLY PHONE CALL SOMEONE IN JAIL SHOULD MAKE TO A PRO WRESTLING PERSONALITY AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2021-06-11 10:00:00

Has there been any update on the Matt Riddle vs. Samantha Tavel lawsuit?  What side do you think will prevail?

The latest on that is that they are going through the discovery portion of the lawsuit, where each side shares information with the other.  That has to be completed by (as of this writing) by November but that could change if either/both sides petition the court for more time.  Once that discovery is done, the court will start to set some trial dates, unless it compels everyone to try and settle or go into some sort of mediation.  As far as who will prevail, if there is one thing I have learned researching, writing and reporting on court cases over the last 15+ years, it's that there is no telling which way these things will go, when someone will decide to settle or withdraw their claims, etc.   It would be silly for me to try and predict a winner, especially on a case that has the type of allegations and circumstances around it.

If you were arrested and you can only turn to the pro wrestling world for help, who's the first person in the wrestling business you call?

There is only one answer to this and it's Jerry McDevitt.

I am watching old WWN/EVOLVE stuff and I don't understand why they stopped running the BB Kings location in New York?  It looked great and seemed like an awesome atmosphere.

It was a great place to watch a show, but sadly, the venue shuttered and is no longer in existence.  The location has been boarded up and unused for several years now, despite it being in an awesome location in the Times Square area.    Between the EVOLVE tapes and the great "They Came For the Stiff" documentary about Sami Callihan vs. Dave Finley, which you can watch below, the venue will always be remembered:

What do think Dixie Carter is doing these days?  Would you want to interview her?

Carter is working for her family's company, PandaBioTech.  She is stil a minority owner in Impact Wrestling and we hear from her occasionally via her responses to something we post on Twitter.  Carter is more than welcome to come back anytime she wants.

What do you think of WWE NXT having Justin Barrasso on the NXT Pre-Show and wanting other media types on?

I think if Justin wants to do it and Sports Illustrated wants him to do it, go Justin!  If WWE wants other media types on, that's their perogative.  I don't think that I would want to do it and I don't think they'd want me on, but if someone else wants to go for it, that's their call and I wouldn't fault them for doing it.

Every now and then you talk about the strangest places you went to wrestling.  Do you have any strange or funny travel stories?

I guess one of the funniest was years ago I was in Atlanta and we decided to go to Abdullah the Butcher's restaurant and when the cab driver realized why exactly were were going so far out of the way, he immediately called in to his job to take his own lunch because he wanted to meet Abby and had no idea the place existed.  He was pretty happy, with the food and with the fact that Abby was there, sitting in a booth, happy to sell him an 8x10 and then tried to sell him everything else that wasn't nailed down!

I remember going on an "underground tour" of Seattle many years ago when Wrestlemania was there and Lance Storm was on the same tour (it was a Wrestlemania weekend) and thinking he was probably the only wrestler who wanted to actually see some of the history of the city, as opposed to sitting around the WWE hotel.  I don't know that was anything strange but maybe a strange coincidence.

I always get a kick out of when conversations begin on a plane with someone sitting next to me and when the topic of our jobs comes up, I explain what I do and there's always this weird face followed by them asking me if I know it isn't "real" to which I respond, "Well, neither is Broadway" and then almost always, their brain reboots and they have stories about what pro wrestlers they or their parents or their grandparents liked as a kid.  If it's about their parents or grandparents, it's almost always a story about Bruno Sammartino since we are either leaving or heading back to the Northeast.
