Liberty Bell
We could not close our overview with the most famous slots ever without mentioning her, the mother of all slots: the Liberty Bell. Invented in 1985 by a mechanic, Charles Fey, Liberty Bell is the first mechanical slot in history.
The original had the classic slot for inserting coins, at the top, small reels in the center and the table with the winning combinations at the bottom. To play, after inserting the coins, you had to pull a lever on the right.
Among the symbols of Liberty Bell there were horseshoes, stars, the suits of the cards (spades, diamonds, hearts but curiously not flowers) and the liberty bell in fact, the bells of freedom. Just three Liberty Bell symbols represented the highest win ever, which at the time amounted to 50 cents.
This slot machine remained as it is until 1910, when Fey created Operator Bell, a slightly modified version with fruit symbols. Today Liberty Bell and Operator Bell have been replaced by more modern slot machines, but the original Liberty Bell can still be found at Liberty Belle Saloon in Reno, Nevada.
