KENTA VS. SHINGO TAKAGI & MORE: 3/16 NEW JAPAN CUP IN TOKYO, JAPAN REPORT

By James Kurokawa on 2021-03-17 05:53:00

3/16/21 Results for New Japan Cup 2021 From Korakuen Hall, Tokyo Japan:

Yuya Uemura, Gabriel Kidd and Yota Tsuji vs. Yuji Nagata, Satoshi Kojima and Hiroyoshi Tenzan.  Nagata forces Kidd to tap out to a cross face.

Chase Owens, Bad Luck Fale and Jay White, with Gedo vs. Toa Henare, Juice Robinson and David Finlay.  Jay White walked to the ring, so his leg injury against Tanahashi  could have been an angle.  Fale pins Henare with a Hand Grenade.   When Finlay and White paired off in the ring, they looked good.  Their match in the next Round should be great.

Jeff Cobb and Will Ospreay, with Bea Priestley vs. BUSHI and SANADA.  Ospreay came to the ring with his right shoulder still taped up.   His nose looked to be fine.  Cobb pins BUSHI with a Tour of the Islands.   Ospreay yelled at SANADA for going after his nose after he injured it against Zack Sabre Jr.  SANADA flipped him off.   Funny stuff.

New Japan Cup 2021 Round 3 Match:   EVIL, with Dick Togo vs.  Toru Yano.  Yano refused to wrestle until Togo left the ringside area.   EVIL waited until Yano almost got counted out.    Yano runs back in the ring and EVIL throws him to the floor.   Togo attacks him and EVIL gets control of the match.   Yano gets beaten all around ringside.    Togo removes a turnbuckle, but throws EVIL into the metal bolt in the corner.  Yano rips another turnbuckle off and throws it to Togo.   Yano pushes EVIL into Togo who takes a bump to the floor.   Yano launches EVIL headfirst into the metal bolt in the corner.  He rolls up EVIL with a schoolboy pin.   Two count.   EVIL charges Yano and Yano pulls down the top rope and EVIL goes flying.   Togo tries to attack but Yano throws him into the guardrails.   Yano steals Togo’s piano wire and chokes out EVIL.  The referee starts the count.   Yano throws an almost unconscious EVIL under the ring and Yano jumps in the ring as the count continues.   The referee’s count is at 18 and Yano starts to celebrate.

But the lights go out in Korakuen Hall.   (I thought of Sabu appearing at this moment).

The lights popped back on and EVIL was in the ring.   He hit Everything is Evil on Yano and gets the pin.

I expected such shenanigans in this match.  I would prefer such comedy in undercard matches, but with Yano, it is what it is.

New Japan Cup 2021 Match:   Shingo Takagi vs. KENTA.

KENTA avoided Takagi at the start of the match.   Takagi was able to corner KENTA and hammer him with punches and chops.   KENTA retreated and Takagi tried to chase him down.   KENTA grabbed the ring bell smashed Takagi in the head.   KENTA took the match to the floor and hit a DDT on the concrete.  KENTA slowed the pace of the match with headlocks and attacks to Takagi’s head.

Takagi rallied back with strikes and shoulder blocks.   KENTA tried for another DDT but Takagi powered him up into a suplex.    KENTA recovered and hit a clothesline from the top rope and went for Game Over.    Takagi was able the break it before KENTA locked it in.

Takagi hit a lariat.   KENTA returned with a boot and a delayed dropkick to the face.   Pace of the match picks up.   KENTA with a draping DDT and a double stomp from the top rope.  Two count.  Takagi goes for Made in Japan, but KENTA rolls him into Game Over.    Takagi gets a break in the ropes.  KENTA with a release Tiger Suplex.   Takagi hits a Pumping Bomber.   They start throwing elbows.   KENTA misses an elbow which Takagi turns into Made in Japan.   Two count.  They trade sick chops and punches.     KENTA hits a vicious knee for a two count.   KENTA hits a Psycho Knee.  Two count.   KENTA goes for Go To Sleep.  Takagi blocks and hits a Death Valley Driver.    Takagi picks up KENTA and hits a massive Pumping Bomber.   Two Count.   Takagi hits Last of the Dragon.   Takagi pins KENTA.

Shingo Takagi moves on to face EVIL.

Wow!   Great match.   Both men beat the heck out of each other.

EVIL comes to ringside to confront Takagi.    Togo comes from behind and hits a low blow.    They beat down Takagi.  They leave and the young lions come to check on Takagi.

The story of this New Japan Cup is the rise of Shingo Takagi.    He has clean wins over Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto and KENTA in this tournament with two more matches to go.    Over the past few years, Takagi moved from the Junior Division to the NEVER Openweight Division and now, in the New Japan Cup, he is establishing himself as a potential contender for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title.

Stay tuned for the rest of Round 3.
