GUESS WHO’S BAAAAAAACK? After a short hiatus since early December, NEW is back to serve up more episodes of Studio Wars! Paul Crockett & Dexter Loux are on commentary. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of NEW, tonight’s episode kicks off with a 25-man battle royal, with a shot at the NEW Live Championship (currently held by Christian Casanova) on the line.

Match 1: 25-Man Battle Royal

It’s Royal Rumble style tonight! Traevon Jordan (One half of “Waves & Curls”) and “The Natural” Channing Thomas are your first two entrants. They start fast, trading false eliminations. Jordan with a big leg lariat as we get the 10-count to the next entrant.

Entry 3: Gio Galvano - Gio cleans house and works with Thomas to work Jordan on the ropes.

Entry 4: Kylon King - He runs in fast but gets cut off by Thomas.

Entry 5: Zane Bernardo - One half of the NEW tag champs. The ring is starting to stack up with talent

Entry 6: Jaylen Brandyn - The other half of “Waves & Curls”. He works and dances with his partner. Kylon King tries to dance with them. That’s a mistake.

Kylon King is eliminated by Waves & Curls.

Entry 7: “Mucho” Chris Moljo - This is his NEW debut. He takes his time to the ring and starts throwing out gut shots and big suplexes. Waves & Curls tries to double up but he blasts them with a double clothesline.

Entry 8: Steven Stetson - Yes, he has a cowboy hat. Another big dude laying waste in the ring. He hits a spinebuster and tosses Zane Bernardo to the apron. Channing Thomas blasts him off of there.

Zane Bernardo is eliminated by Channing Thomas.

Stetson’s annoyed at the kill steal but can’t get Thomas off the apron.

Entry 9: “The American Sumo” Mike Gamble - Sumo!!!! Gamble makes an immediate impact, working fast and powerful. Big corner hip attacks for everyone and the entire ring is down.

Entry 10: Moshpit - He goes right for Sumo. Gamble is distracted and every gangs up. Big throw off and Sumo goes toe to toe with Moljo. Moljo charges in and gets dropped over the top rope.

Chris Moljo is eliminated by MIke Gamble

Entry 11: Tony Vega - Vega goes toe to toe with Jaylen and is tossed over the top. Vega with a follow up forearm to drop him.

Jaylen Brandyn is eliminated by Tony Vega

Entry 12: Thrillride - The absolutely savage is here and coming in hot. Fists for everyone. He tries to eliminate Channing Thomas but he keeps hanging on. Sumo takes a shot at it but he’s unsuccessful too.

Entry 13: Shawn Knyte - During his entrance, Traevon Jordan gets eliminated by either Channing Thomas or Gio Galvano (camera was off the elimination so was hard to tell). Knyte right off the top to cross body Sumo and a few others. Gio wants to slam Vega out but it gets slipped and Vega sends him out.

Traevon Jordan is eliminated by Gio Galvano & Channing Thomas (probably)
Gio Galvano is eliminated by Tony Vega.

Entry 14: Swilly O’Brien - Swilly and Moshpit team up to pop up Knyte into a facebuster. Vega almost gets a third elimination on Channing Thomas but that dude hangs on again. In the chaos, Swilly gets Stetson over in the corner.

Entry 15: Jay Onyx - Knyte’s partner is here! Stereo superkick for Swilly. Moshpit kicked down. Gamble and Vega work over Thomas in the corner.

Entry 16: Dustin “Flash” Waller - He teams up with Knyte and Onyx to serve up superkicks to everyone that steps up.

Entry 17: Dinomite - There’s some confusion over Dino’s name. Is it Deeno or Dyno? Either way, he enters the fray and gets germaned for his trouble before working over Waller.

Entry 18: “Red Lion” Chris Battle - Another NEW vet enters the battle. Spears for everyone! Thomas and O’Brien slow him down but they get spears too. Waller cuts him off with superkicks. He goes to the top but Gamble clubs him off to the floor. Battle blasts Moshpit with en enziguri and he’s out too.

Dustin Waller is eliminated by Mike Gamble.
Moshpit is eliminated by Chris Battle

Entry 19: RJ Rude - The other half of the NEW tag champs is without help but comes in hot. Another close elimination attempt on Thomas. DVD for Battle. Rude backdrops Shawn Knyte out of the ring.

Mike Gamble is eliminated by Wrecking Ball Legursky

Entry 22: Cam Zagami - Club Cam is here! Jawbreaker to RJ Rude as he works the elimination in the corner.RJ breaks away but the opportunistic Channing Thomas catches him and sends him flying over the top.

Entry 23: Big Bacon Brad Hollister - Bacon is in it to win it, after failing to dethrone Casnova for the NEW LIVE championship in the main event of the previous episode. He catches Swilly O’Brien and immediately sends him flying to the floor. Bacon serving up Germans. Big clothesline to send JP over. Double clothesline with Legursky and everyone is down

Swilly O’Brien is eliminated by Brad Hollister
JP Grayson is eliminated by Brad Hollister

Entry 24: Jared Silberkleit - On one hand, Paul Crockett is saying “No! Oh no!” At this surprise entrant. On the other hand, I see he has to step into a ring with Brad Hollister, Chris Battle & Wrecking Ball Legursky without any backup from the Graysons. Silberkleit spends a moment yelling at commentary until Chris Battle comes running in for the kill. Jared ducks and the Red Lion flies over the top. Oh....oh no.

Chris Battle is eliminated by Jared Silberkleit. (-_-)

Seeing this, Wrecking Ball Legursky doesn’t come running. He walks up slow and and presses slams Silberkleit to the floor. OK ALL IS RIGHT IN THE WORLD.

Jared SIlberkleit is eliminated by Wrecking Ball Legursky XD

Entry 25: “Man of Steel” Mike Verna - Yessssss! Verna brings the powerslams. Toe to toe with Legursky. Verna dumps Thomas over the top and the elimination actually happens this time!

We’re down to the Final Three! Hollister with a huge powerbomb on Verna. He goes to put him over the top, Verna reverses it. Legursky at the ropes quick to try putting Verna over. Hollister slides out of danger and pushes them both over to the floor. Big Bacon is gettting another shot at the gold!

Mike Verna is eliminated by Brad Hollister
Wrecking Ball Legursky is eliminated by Brad Hollister

Winner (and #1 Contender for the NEW Liver Championship): Big Bacon Brad Hollister

As an opener, this was good for a number of reasons. A solid rumble style match (and the sheer number of humans that filled it) served as an opportunity for NEW to recap a lot of storytelling that happened in the first 5 episodes from a couple months back, plus introduce some new faces for upcoming episodes. If this was your first look at NEW, you got a real sense of the roster they have right now and who the major players will be on shows to come. This was good.

Jon Roy interviews Channing Thomas, who says it was a NATURAL performance. Jared Silberkleit and JP Grayson show up in full recruitment mode, since Tommy Grayson is out for the time being and JP needs a partner. Thomas shakes his hand. Welp.

Main Event: Basic Becca vs Vita Von Starr

Becca has a scrunchie for Vita. It matches her outfit! Vita does a cartwheel and sends that gift flying. This makes Becca sad. Vita got the flips but gets hip tossed. She uses her long legs to wrap up Becca’s head. Becca reverses into a pin attempt. Back slide for another. Vita with a slap drops her. Becca sends her to the corner and tries a handspring into the corner but Vita clubs her and stomps her. Vita shoots her into the post and Becca is out on the floor. Vita with hard chops and kicks, posts her again. Two count back in the ring but Becca is in trouble. Desperation forearms from Becca but Vita with a snap suplex for two. Brain buster for another two. Becca tries a German but she gets shoved off and hits a pump kick. Vita caught running with a boot but rebounds with a flying face slam. Becca reverses and handsprings into a huge slap in the corner. Pair of running corner elbows and a bulldog from Becca. Becca hits an air raid crash for two. Becca tries another backslide but VIta reverses into a Michanoku driver for two. Vita is frustrated and dropping strikes to the center of the back. Becca hits a spinning back kick, another kick out. Becca comes running, Vita picks her off the corner and hits a powerbomb. Stack up pin for three.
Winner: Vita Von Starr

This ALMOST fell apart in a few places but ultimately served as a pretty good intro to Vita Von Starr, who spent a lot of the match stalking Becca and serving up some heavy offense.

Christian Casnova offers his congratulations to Hollister for winning the Rumble but next week, it’s going to be 2 out of 3 falls for the NEW LIVE Championship and Casanova has no plans to be a former champ.

And that’s it for the return of Studio Wars! To be honest, this episode COULD have just been the rumble. It was almost a disservice to put a no-build matchup of Becca/Vita in the slot after, when it could have easily worked in a more traditional card for next episode. Next week’s championship match does look super promising. Until then!ard
