AEW DARK TV REPORT

By Joshua Higham on 2021-01-20 14:26:00

We are back in Jacksonville for another edition of AEW Dark. Excalibur, Taz, and Ricky Starks are starting the night at the commentary desk.

Luchasaurus is out first with the rest of Jurassic Express and grabs a mic. ‘Saurus says he knows there are no dragons in AEW and that it’s just Brandon Cutler. Brandon Cutler comes out, and they face off mask to mask. They brawl to the floor, which is kinda surprising for what I expect to be a face vs face match. Am I missing something from Being the Elite or something? ‘Saurus is no-selling or blocking most of Cutler’s offense. Cutler kicks out of the tailwhip and chokeslam, but not another kick. ‘Saurus for the win. Cutler loses his eight match win streak.

Up next is Sammy Guevara vs El Australiano. Australiano gets a ton of offense in to start the match. Guevara ducks a kick and takes control. GTH from Guevara gives the Spanish God the win ahead of the three-way tag match within the Inner Circle. This one was rough. A lot of Australiano’s lucha-based offense looked a bit wonky and off-target.

Guevara grabs the mic and says his shoulder will have gold on it soon enough. Another promo from Guevara that was odd in tone considering Guevara’s character.

We get a commercial for Wrestling with the Week, featuring Scorpio Sky, which is convenient since the next match is…

Scorpio Sky vs Nick Comoroto. Taz brings up Comoroto’s amateur background and size and power advantage over Sky. Comoroto has his way with Sky for the first few minutes of the match. And it feels very noticeable that there is less than ten people as the audience. Sky finally gets some distance and takes advantage, hitting TKO for the win.

Our next match is Marti Daniels taking on Shanna. Shanna can’t get the bridge on the tiger suplex, so she does it again to get the win. And another wrestler talks to a camera, and we can’t hear them.

Anthony Agogo joins commentary as Mike Verna and Baron Black team to take on The Butcher and the Blade. Butcher and Blade focus the bulk their attack on Baron Black as Bunny laughs at ringside. Verna gets tagged in, but it isn’t enough. A powerbomb/neckbreaker combo gets the pin and the win for Butcher and the Blade.

Commercials for the AEW Awards and Killing the Business.

Ryzin, Adam Priest, and Vary Morales are this week’s makeshift trio to take on the Gunn Club. I’m not gonna pop for the Gunn Club until Uncle Bart shows up. Colton and Austin pull out a new tandem move, a backdrop into a neckbreaker called 3:10 to Yuma, to get the win.

Jon Cruz and Danny Limelight team up to take on Santana and Ortiz. Relatively quick work for Santana and Ortiz as they prepare for the Inner Circle triple threat tag match on Dynamite.

Peter Avalon is in the ring with a microphone, claiming he’s the premiere attraction on AEW Dark. Avalon wants a match of his own, issuing a challenge to Lee Johnson for The Walk Off. We get the rules for the Walk Off. 3 pretty judges, one outfit, 10 steps forward, pose, and 10 steps back. Any real man can win a match, but it takes a real man to win The Walk Off. So, I guess we have Lee Johnson and Peter Avalon in a Walk Off next week.

Lee Johnson and Aaron Solow are teaming again, and this is the third match in a row with someone using some kind of gun taunt. Their opponents are Private Party accompanied by Matt Hardy. Hardy keeps telling Private Party to show some attitude and take any means necessary. Kassidy seems to have tweaked his knee, but a right hand from Hardy and a double enzuigiri from Private Party gets them the win.

Big Swole is the number one ranked competitor in the women’s division, and her opponent tonight is Alex Gracia. Gracia starts out by working on Swole’s arms. Taz and Excalibur mention that Swole is learning under Dean Malenko, starting to add the cloverleaf to her arsenal. But Swole hits a ripcord discus forearm to get the win.

Sonny Kiss is taking on Zack Clayton next. Sonny Kiss is noticeably more aggressive and gets the pinfall after the diving split legdrop.

KC Navarro and AJ Kirsch are our next makeshift team. Kirsch making his first appearance after his MLW announcing contract is done. This might be my first time seeing Kirsch wrestle since the Tough Enough days. Top Flight are the opponents. Kirsch starts off using his size advantage, taunting Top Flight. Top Flight finally gain the speed advantage, isolating Kirsch on the floor. Darius gets the rollup on Navarro to get the three count out of nowhere.

Katalina Perez and Tesha Price are teaming up to take on Ivelisse and Diamante. Diamante and Price start things off, and Taz and Excalibur are pointing out some of the rookie mistakes Price and Perez are making. Kind of interesting to hear commentators talking about footwork and efficiency of movement. Ivelisse and Diamante take control with their more aggressive, ground-and-pound style. A spinning kick is enough for Ivelisse to pin Katalina.

Fuego del Sol and Shawn Dean are teaming up again to take on the Acclaimed. We get Cena and Go Big Show references from Caster’s rap. Critically Acclaimed on Fuego gets the pin for the Acclaimed. At a certain point, Shawn Dean will have to win a match, right?

Our main event is Chaos Project taking on the Lucha Bros. Pac is staying ringside. Luther tries to play mind games with Penta, but it’s not working. Aubrey Edwards almost gets sandwiched in the corner after an Irish whip, but she moves just enough to avoid contact. I’ve grown to really enjoy Luther using Serpentico as a weapon and Serpentico trying to stop that. Best line of the night: Excalibur asks, “how do Luther and Serpentico communicate?” Taz replies, “they text.” Package piledriver and double stomp on Serpentico to give Lucha Bros the win.
