OFFICIAL DATE SET FOR AAA'S TRIPLEMANIA FEATURING LAREDO KID VS. KENNY OMEGA & MORE

By Oliver Taylor on 2020-11-20 13:09:00

Lucha Libre AAA World Wide will hold its Triplemanía XXVIII show on December 26 without live fans in attendance, per Lucha Central’s Eric Mutter.

Three matches were announced for the show at a virtual press conference on October 26. All Elite Wrestling’s Kenny Omega will defend the AAA Mega Championship against Laredo Kid. It will be Omega’s fourth defense of the championship, having defeating Jack Evans on AEW Dark last November, Dragon Lee at Triplemanía Regia last December and Sammy Guevara on AEW Dynamite in March.

Omega is set to challenge Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship on December 2nd. Holding the AAA Mega Championship has not seemed to alter Omega’s booking in AEW at all, but one could reasonably assume winning the AEW World Championship would presumably affect Omega’s booking outside of AEW.

Chessman will face Pagano in a Hair vs. Hair match and there will be a tag team match debuting AAA’s new Marvel-themed wrestlers. Aracno (Spider-Man) and Leyenda Americana (Captain America) will face Terror Púrpura (Thanos) and Venenoide (Venom).

Mutter added most of the Marvel-themed wrestlers are expected to be portrayed by foreign talent. Impact Wrestling’s Kylie Rae was reportedly set to portray one of characters under a mask, but she has since left the wrestling business.

According to Mutter’s report, Impact’s Taya Valkyrie will also defend the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship against Lady Shani. The match has not officially been announced yet. It is worth noting PWInsider reported earlier this week that Valkyrie’s contract with Impact is set to expire next month.

Mutter speculated that a major matchup such as L.A. Park versus Rush is unlikely to take place due to the show taking place without live fans in attendance.

Carlito, Epico, Lio Rush and Primo are all expected to compete at Triplemanía per Hugo Savinovich, who works as a commentator for the company.

It was announced at the virtual press conference on October 26 that the final match card will consist of seven matches.

El Hijo del Vikingo, who amazed many fans with his appearances in Impact and Major League Wrestling, recently returned to training and lucha libre expert @luchablog speculated he could return at Triplemanía.

Holding the show on December 26 also avoids clashing with the return of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. The Mexican boxer, who has not fought since November 2019 due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic and a legal dispute with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, will challenge Callum Smith for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship on December 19 in Texas.
