BREAKING DOWN WHAT COULD HAPPEN IN THE NJPW G1 CLIMAX, MORE ON GLEAT DEBUT, ALL JAPAN & MORE

By Oliver Taylor on 2020-10-15 13:09:00

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Tetsuya Naito has teased he will select a challenger from outside of New Japan Pro Wrestling for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship if he wins the G1 Climax in an interview with Tokyo Sports.

Naito pointed out Keiji Mutoh won the G1 Climax in 1995 while holding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and faced Nobuhiro Takeda – from UWF International – on January 4, 1996.

The same situation occurred when Kensuke Sasaki won the G1 Climax in 2000 with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and faced Toshiaki Kawada – from All Japan Pro Wrestling – on January 4, 2001.

Naito also mentioned Hiromu Takahashi as a possible challenger.

The full Tokyo Sports article can be read here.

For Naito to win B block, he will need to defeat KENTA and for SANADA to defeat EVIL or EVIL and SANADA to draw.

New Japan has now confirmed the match order for the B block final on October 17 in Ry?goku Kokugikan. It will be:

• Gabriel Kidd vs. Yuya Uemura
• B block: Toru Yano vs. YOSHI-HASHI
• B block: Hirooki Goto vs. Juice Robinson
• B block: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
• B block: KENTA vs. Tetsuya Naito
• B block: EVIL vs. SANADA

EVIL holds the tiebreaker over Naito. If EVIL defeats SANADA, he wins the block regardless of Naito’s result.

SANADA also holds a tiebreaker over Naito. If SANADA defeats EVIL and Naito loses to KENTA, he wins the block.

Before the B block final, New Japan will hold its A block final show tomorrow in Ry?goku Kokugikan.

Only a limited number of wresters will compete on each G1 Climax show for precautionary reasons. As such, A block competitors will not compete on the undercard of shows featuring B block tournament matches and vice versa.

Tomorrow’s show is exclusively A block wrestlers. Each tournament show will start with a singles match between two young lions (Gabriel Kidd, Yota Tsuji or Yuya Uemura) followed by five tournament matches.

The full card is:

• Gabriel Kidd vs. Yota Tsuji
• A block: Jeff Cobb vs. Yujiro Takahashi
• A block: Minoru Suzuki vs. Shingo Takagi
• A block: Kazuchika Okada vs. Will Ospreay
• A block: Kota Ibushi vs. Taichi
• A block: Jay White vs. Tomohiro Ishii

The block is Jay White’s to lose. He currently leads the block with 12 points with tiebreakers over Kota Ibushi and Kazuchika Okada. If White defeats Tomohiro Ishii, White wins the block.

Ibushi needs to defeat Taichi and Ishii to defeat White. Okada does not factor into Ibushi’s equation.

Okada needs both White and Ibushi to lose and to defeat Will Ospreay.

Ospreay is the least likely to win the block. He needs to defeat Okada, Yujiro Takahashi to defeat Jeff Cobb, Taichi to defeat Ibushi and Ishii to defeat White.
