MOVING ON A BUDGET

By Kendall Jenkins on 2020-08-12 07:30:00

Moving home on a budget is a challenge without considering all the new health, safety, and hygiene practices that the Coronavirus pandemic has thrown our way. However, it is possible to move with a minimal budget with these five simple tips.

1. De-clutter

De-cluttering is probably the most significant way to save money on the move. Whether you are planning a DIY move or using a professional removal company, your move is determined by your move size. The less you have, the smaller the removal van, and the less it will cost at the end of the day.

Hold a garage sale and sell everything you don't want, need, or use anymore. Remember to keep in mind social distancing, wear a mask, and employ hygiene practices such as sanitizing goods for sale, all surfaces, and hands-on a periodic basis. Anything that stays behind can be donated to family, friends, or charity. Anything broken, unusable, or won't sell should be taken to the dump. A roll-on dumpster is an extra expense that you don't need to do it yourself.

You can use the money you make from the yard sale to contribute to your moving budget.

2. Free Packing Materials

Go to local stores, especially liquor stores, and ask them for boxes. More often than not, they will give you boxes free of charge. Ask friends and family to donate newspapers (if you haven't already gotten your collection) to wrap fragile items before packing them in a box. They make ideal packing materials and won't cost you a cent. You can also ask the retailer where you got your boxes for used bubble wrap or popcorn foam for additional protection for your belongings.

3. Compare, Compare And Compare

Compare the cost of a DIY move with that of a professional move. Remember to take into account the cost of labor, the moving van, equipment rental (if necessary), fuel, and any additional costs that will form part of the DIY move. Compare quotes from local removal companies and ask them for a discount. You can also so do your own research and find cheap movers at 9Kilo.com.

Although a DIY will more often than not work out cheaper than a professional move, with a discount from a local removal company and foregoing all the added extras, you may be surprised that a professional move can be less costly. Keep in mind that a professional budget move won't just save you money but will also save you time and back-breaking labor.

4. Labor

If you plan on a DIY move, you will need some help, especially with moving large, bulky furniture items and heavy appliances. You can save on labor by asking family friends to join in and help you load and unload your belongings. Make it a moving day party and ask everyone to bring snacks and beverages or even enjoy a barbecue when all is said and done to thank your helpers.

It is once again important to keep in mind hygiene and Covid-19 for your helpers or laborers. Make sure everyone is wearing a mask and set up a hand sanitizing station. Also, sanitize all door handles and make sure that all inside doors are left open so that no-one needs to touch the handles. Limit the number of people who are inside the house at one time and practice social distancing.

5. Professional Moves And Surprise Charges

If you have decided on a professional move, you can save costs by foregoing any added extras. Pack your belongings into boxes yourself and don't go to the extra expense of having a packing and unpacking service. Find out if your household insurance will cover your goods during the move or find cheaper moving insurance rather than using the Moving company insurance.

Make sure that you won't pay for any equipment that isn't necessary during the move. Also, check the terms and conditions carefully regarding the distance traveled, fuel costs, and the time factor. If your trip ends up taking longer than anticipated, you could be saddled with surprise charges for labor. A trip that is further than a certain specified distance is probably going to cost more in fuel. Check your quote carefully and make sure that all unforeseen and incidental expenses are included.

Remember that a budget move does not have to be a cheap move. A less costly professional move should not mean that you forego the expertise and skills that come along with hiring the pros. And a DIY move should also not put the safety and security of your belongings at risk.

So choose a removal company that is reputable and reliable or do some research into tips for moving that take into account the safety of your goods during transit as well as your health and well-being. The last thing you need is to save money on a DIY move to end up in the emergency room with an injury that will result in medical expenses.
