SEQUEL TO BAUTISTA'S 'MY SPY' IN PLAY

By Mike Johnson & Paul Jordan on 2020-08-11 14:56:00

Deadline is reporting that Amazon and STX Films are exploring possibilities of a sequel to Dave Bautista's action-comedy "My Spy". According to the article, they want all major players to return. There is no confirmation on distribution at this time but insiders state that they were happy with the film's success on Prime Video.

The original film debuted in June on Amazon Prime.  It was originally slated for a late 2019 release, but pushed back to January 2020 before being pushed back again to April 2020 before being pulled again due to the coronavirus pandemic.  It opened theatrically in several countries but never in the United States.

Promotional material notes the film, "follows JJ a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista) who has been demoted and finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, named Sophie (Chloe Coleman) where he has been sent undercover begrudgingly to surveil her family.  When Sophie discovers hidden cameras in her apartment she uses her tech savviness to locate where the surveillance operation is set.  In exchange for not blowing JJ's cover Sophie convinces him to spend time with her and teach her to be a spy. Despite his reluctance JJ finds he is no match for Sophie's disarming charm and wit."

The film also features Kristen Schaal, Parisa Fitz-Henley and Ken Jeong.
