STEINER SHUTTERS RESTAURANT, CASSANDRO FEATURE FILM ANNOUNCED, LUFISTO AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-08-03 08:30:00

It was announced over the weekend that the Shoney's restaurant in Acworth, Georgia owned by former WCW World Champion Scott Steiner has closed.  It opened in 2016 and shut down due to COVID-19 and will not be re-opening. The restaurant featured a display case featuring items from Steiner's career, including his Michigan University jacket, action figures, PPV posters and photos.

Mark Bureau sent the following...The restaurant had been a staple of that exit for the 27 years I have lived here.  It was torn to the ground and rebuilt prior to Scott buying it.  Interesting note: It is one of the first Shoney’s that had a full bar in it...at least it was the first one I had ever seen.  It was a lot like Cheers.  It had a lot of regular bargoers there.  It will be missed.

Deadline.com reported on 7/30 that  Gael García Bernal will star as lucha exotico star Cassandro in a feature film on his life and career.  The film is being directed by   Oscar winning and two-time Emmy nominee filmmaker Roger Ross Williams.   “As a filmmaker, my own life experience has inspired my passion to tell inspirational stories about outsiders and uplift the voices of people we don’t normally see on screen. The true story of Cassandro, Saúl Armendáriz, was one I knew I wanted to tell from the moment I met him. I look forward to being able to bring Saúl’s story to a wide audience,” said Williams.    Deadline also reports that Amazon is in line to pick up the rights for the film but Amazon did not confirm that.

ECW Press will be publishing an autobiography on Canadian star LuFisto in the Spring of 2022 with Greg Oliver co-authoring.  Oliver is also co-authoring John Arezzi's memoir, which will be released next year.  They just finished the final draft on that book.

This week's edition of Vampiro Unleashed on the El Rey Network will feature Antonio Tijerno, the CEO of the Hispanic Foundation, discussing what qualities it takes to become a good leader.  The episode will air on Thursday 8/6 at 9 PM EST.

The El Rey Network will broadcast the 1970 film Santo vs. The Riders of Terror this Saturday 8/8 at 10 PM EST.    The plot - "Santo must save a small town from a band of marauding lepers."

Yesterday was the 22nd anniversary of the all-time best top to bottom ECW PPV ever, Heatwave '98 in Dayton, Ohio.  The venue, The Hara Arena, was destroyed in 2019 by a tornado, although the remnants of the Arena still remain a year later.
