NEW JAPAN ANNOUNCES NEW CHAMPIONSHIP, TOP MATCHES FOR JINGU STADIUM NEXT MONTH

By Steven Fernandes on 2020-07-28 14:42:00

New Japan Pro Wrestling made several announcements today.

After teasing a ‘controversial idea’ since Sengoku Lord in Nagoya, Kazuchika Okada announced during press conference today the creation of the KOPW 2020 title. Unlike any other championship in New Japan Pro Wrestling, there will not be a KOPW championship belt, as will be explained momentarily.  The provisional KOPW 2020 will be decided across two nights, on August 26 in Korakuen Hall, and on August 29 at Summer Struggle in Jingu Stadium.  Eight wrestlers will wrestle in four singles matches on August 26th in Tokyo, suggesting their own rules to the first round, potentially steel cage matches, ladder matches, etc.   Fans will then vote on what the stipulation for what those matches will be.   The winners of those singles matches will advance to a four way match on August 29 under ‘regular’ four way rules. The winner of that match will become the provisional KOPW2020.  The title will then be defended across the rest of 2020 with those title bouts held under stipulations voted on by fans.  The final winner will be presented with a KOPW trophy.  New Japan will then start the process again in 2021.

At a special press conference in Tokyo today, two major title matches were made for August 29 and Summer Struggle in Jingu:

*EVIL will defend the IWGP Intercontinental and Heavyweight Championships against Tetsuya Naito in Jingu Stadium.

*Hiromu Takahashi will defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against Taiji Ishimori.
