FAMILY OF IVAN KOLOFF DISAVOWS MUSICAL LOOSELY BASED ON HIS LIFE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-07-04 08:08:00

The family of the late Ivan Koloff released a statement on their Facebook page disavowing Rockquiem for a Wrestler, a musical currently in developmental that had been promoted as having been loosely based on the life of Koloff, an aspect of the show that had been dropped in its most recent promotion.

Via Facebook, Koloff's family noted that the show does not feature anything about Koloff's deep religious beliefs and that a scene involving a character based on Koloff taking part in what the family described as a "gay sex act certainly never happened."  The family noted that while there is such a thing as creative license, "if any of you watched this abomination, please do not think this was in any way, that this was a portrayal of the story of Ivan."

The complete statement can be read at this link.

Rockquiem For A Wrestler, by Philip Paul Kelly, bills itself as "a dramatic parody inspired by wrestling champion Ivan Koloff" and featured the music of Eddie Star and Paul Castrataro.   The most recent press release for the project, which did not mention Koloff, noted, "The musical dramatizes the dangerous, absurd, and often tragic lives of wrestlers while giving the audience the experience of being at a Rock Concert."

Rockquiem recently streamed a staged reading of the show from The Triad Theater in New York City.  The project remains in development for future theatrical productions.  PWInsider.com out to the production, which declined to comment.
