FYTERFEST MAIN EVENT ANNOUNCED, HOW LONG BRITT BAKER & FENIX WILL BE OUT, JON MOXLEY ON WHY HE HAD A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER, CODY ON TNT TITLE WIN & MORE: POST DOUBLE OR NOTHING PPV MEDIA SCRUM COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-05-24 00:01:00

AEW is holding a post-Double or Nothing virtual media scrum currently.  PWInsider.com will update with live notes from the media scrum as it is ongoing.

CODY

AEW TNT Champion Cody was the first guest.  I asked him his thoughts on the company adding the belt and his own championship win given the history of the Rhodes family with Turner Broadcasting.  Cody said that when he won the belt, he was thinking of his mom since she's the parent that is left.  He loves the history between the Turner family and the Rhodes family with Tony Schiavone and Arn Anderson both talking with him about the history, but Arn told him it was about making his own legacy today.

Cody said Lance is one of the top three people he's ever been in the ring with.  Tony Khan and QT Marshall were the ones behind him coming to the company and Cody questioned it at first but he questions no more.

To have Mike Tyson here was fitting since he was a fan at the first PPV.  He thinks Jake Roberts knew better not to mess with Tyson.  It was a surreal, special moment to have Tyson with them.  To have Tyson hand him the title was surreal.

Dave LaGreca asked about the roster and how proud Cody is.  He said that you can feel the itch and the real passion of the talents and it's such a motivating thing for the roster.  Even social distancing, they wanted to be part of the show.  He's also really proud of everyone who is behind the scenes working on the production side of the company.  They don't know the word no.  There is a disconnect between production and talent elsewhere.  The first thing he told Tony Khan is they can't have that here and Tony has instilled that.  No one has the symbiotic relationship between wrestlers and production like AEW does right now.  That lead to tonight, a show that you just can't forget.

ESPN noted that they've made the most with the tough situation the world has been thrown into.  Cody said it's been one of the most challenging times as a promoter and competitor ever.  He wants to get back into arena and to fans.  Kazarian had a few drinks and came up to him and said that this is a time that pro wrestling is going to forget, but they are not going to forget tonight.  Cody said there's an albatross of not having fans, but they still gave fans a ton of entertainment for a $50 PPV to try and make people happy.  He said it's his literal job and obligation to do that and he's so proud and happy with tonight.

Jim Varsollone asked him how important it was to tell the old school story of Lance Archer dominating and have the big babyface comeback.  Rhodes said that he didn't want to get too much inside, but everything he does is old school.  That's the style he prefers.  He said that he and the other members of The Elite have an unbreakable bond.  The Jacksons have a Deadpool inspired version of wrestling that breaks the fourth wall.  Omega has a DDT inspired version.  He has a Crockett style inspired version of wrestling.  They don't have to agree and they all bring a different style.  He tries to bring the style he believes in and he hopes he keeps getting better at it.

Cody was asked thoughts on the design of the TNT Championship belt.  He said that the part that is most special is the design that features Ted Turner's mansion.  If you ever drive past Techwood Drive, that's the place.  They have a new silver-plated version of the belt still coming that was delayed due to COVID-19 but he doesn't even know if he wants it now.  The belt he was handed tonight is the coolest thing he's ever seen.
