WHEN WWE 90 DAY NO COMPETES COME INTO PLAY, FRYE VS. GODZILLA, WWF NY RESTAURANT AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-04-18 10:00:00

I seem to remember Don Frye in a monster movie but I can't remember the name?

Godzilla - Final Wars featured Frye playing Captain Gordon.

Hi. Great job. Will All the released superstars stay at home for 90 days? And also, has the 90 rule changed in this year or they can still appear off screen for other promotions? Last: is the 90 rule applied to the released wrestlers only, or even to the wrestler that come to an end date with their contract?  Thank you so much, you and your elite section are a great resource for an Italian fan.

When they release someone, they pay them for those 90 days.  So, they are still technically with WWE until the end of the 90 days, thus they cannot appear elsewhere.

If a contract ends, there is no 90 day window.  The second it ends, you are free to do whatever you want.

Why did WWE ever get in the restaurant business and why did they close the place?  Whatever happened to it?  Did you ever go there?

WWE never intended to get into the restaurant business.  They actually licensed their name to what became the WWF restaurant aka The World but the company that licensed it ended up pulling out so WWF decided to move forward themselves as opposed to having the public embarassment of the project being announced and then being shut down.  They operated it and tried all sorts of different promotional ideas but they were literally in one of the most expensive areas of the world for rent, Times Square and the restaurant was never, ever heavily populated by customers except on nights when PPVs were being held or they had talent appearing.  It was a financial drain and after five years of rebranding it, trying different ideas, hosting concerts and club nights, etc.  they made the decision to close it.  The property was eventually taken over by The Hard Rock Cafe, which moved their location to Times Square, where it still exists and has done far better overall than WWE had ever done as a chain restaurant.

I did go to the restaurant a number of times, mostly for events that were being held there - they would air the UK exclusive PPVs there, which at the time was the only place you could see those shows live here in the States.  It was OK but nothing about it really stood out in terms of the quality of food and honestly, it hardly featured any exhibits or anything truly "WWE" related beyond the retail store when you entered.   They were in a heavy trafficked area in terms of people but the average person wasn't going to go to a WWE themed restaurant over a Planet Hollywood or ESPN Zone at the time.  That said, if you wanted to go somewhere and have wrestling on TV in the background while you ate, it was probably your spot though.

Do you ever think WWE would go back into that business?

You never say never, but I doubt it.  I don't see them wanting to put that sort of investment into a physical location unless it was something attached to the oft-rumored but still yet to materialize WWE Hall of Fame attraction.

Do you think WWE will do AXXESS later this year to make up for Wrestlemania?

No, I do not.
