TIPS FOR FINDING THE RIGHT SHOES FOR YOUR FEET

Tips For Finding The Right Shoes For Your Feet

Everyone wears shoes. Having shoes that fit properly will help to keep your feet healthy and allow you to do things you need to do. Everyone knows that you can't enjoy yourself if your feet are hurting. So make sure that you treat your feet well and wear shoes that fit right.

To help you choose the best shoes for your feet, here are 10 top tips (along with some bonus tips) from the Pedorthic Footcare Association.

1. There are no standard shoe sizes. Instead, sizes vary between various shoe styles ad brands. An 8M size from one manufacturer may fit like an 8N size from a different one. Don't choose shoes based on the size that is marked on the shoe. Begin with a range of sizes and take it from there.

2. Every time you buy shoes, make sure to have both of your feet measured. Over time your feet will continue to change in both shape and size. Many people have one foot that is slightly wider and/or longer than their other foot, so the biggest foot should be fit first.

Bonus tip: Visit a shoe store and have both of your feet measured. Wear the kind of sock that you will be wearing for a specific activity with the shoes.

3. Choose shoes that match your foot's shape. If the shape of your shoe matches the shape of your foot, then you are on the right track to finding a good shoe fit.

4. Whenever you are shopping for shoes, try on different styles and types. Judge shoes by the way they fit your feet. Don't choose a style that irritates parts of your feet, feels too loose, or feels too tight. If shoes feel too loose or too snug when you are trying them on, your feet might hurt later on.

5. Your shoes need to be as wide as your feet are, and longer. Your feet elongate when your shoes come into contact with the ground when you are running or walking.

Bonus tip: Allow enough space (3/8"-1/2") for the longest toe at the end of your shoe.

6. Be sure that the widest part of your feet (the "balls") fit into the widest parts of the shoes comfortably. That match will allow the shoes to bend in the place where your feet flex, to give you a more comfortable and functional wearing experience.

7. Your heels should fit in the shoes comfortably. Don't purchase shoes that are too small to try to avoid heel slippage. When there is excess slippage in your shoe's heel, look for a different shoe, or have minor adjustments made by the shoe fitter.

8. Orthotics or inserts affect how shoes fit. Foot orthotics or shoe inserts will take up some of the space in the shoe that is intended for the feet. If you need orthotics or inserts, you need to get a roomier shoe. Otherwise, your orthotics or inserts will not function correctly and your shoes also won't fit correctly. Try orthotic shoes rather than inserts for a superior fit like Pendleton Shoes.

9. Choose shoes that are appropriate for a specific activity as well as the amount of time you will be performing the activity. Feet change size and shape throughout the day as well as under various conditions: from standing or sitting, with weight gain, in warm weather, and after exercise. When you are shopping for shoes, keep in mind that your feet tend to be larger following activity, so purchase your shoes accordingly.

10. Walk around in your shoes to ensure they feel comfortable. It isn't necessary to run a marathon while trying shoes on but walk around the shoe store at least. Shoes affect your activities and health and also are an expression of your sense of style. So make sure you chose wisely.
