Writing your college research papers can be daunting and bothersome. You need to come up with an interesting topic, debatable thesis statement, and sift through multitude of sources before you can finally start writing a paper. Some students choose to pay for papers written and thus win more time for themselves. They order high-quality essays, research papers, literature reviews, proposals, and even dissertations from such reliable online companies as PapersOwl, Edusson, or EduBirdie, whose writers locate and utilize the best sources, both online and printed, when writing your paper. You can also take advantage of writing companies’ professional help or use your own skills and creativity to create a strong research paper by yourself. Once you choose a topic for your paper, you should start looking for credible sources to support your claims and arguments. Though it may seem easy at first sight, in fact, getting hold of trustworthy and relevant scholarly sources, as well as analyzing and combining them, can be quite time-consuming and painstaking. Still, with our help you’ll learn how to make this process quicker and more pleasant. Just go on reading our article.

Why Sources are so Important?

Though the answer may seem obvious, we’d like to dwell a little bit more on the importance of sources for your research papers.

First, it’s impossible to create a strong, trustworthy paper without relying on other people’s expertise. In other words, your own knowledge acquired before and at college merely won’t suffice to substantiate your claims. Of course, you’re free to offer your personal judgments, make inferences, and assess the credibility of information presented, but at the same time, you should refer to and cite relevant sources to convince your readers of your credibility and objectivity as an author.

What Sources to Use?

Sources can be people, publications, artworks, TV programs, and various records of documents that provide information. When working on your research paper, students are often asked to use both primary and secondary sources to back up their arguments.

Primary sources are the original source of information created “at the time under study.” Primary source also can be a person providing the first-hand account of a situation, or a document written by such a person. Thus, if you’re assigned to write an essay for your history class where you should analyze the consequences of the American Revolutionary War, you may want to use such primary sources as Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, petition issued by the Continental Congress in July of 1775 to King George III, Correspondence of George Washington, etc. If you’re asked to use primary sources when analyzing the consequences of Hamlet’s revenge, makes sure to use William Shakespeare’s tragedy to back up claims. It’s also a good idea to include a reasonable amount of direct quotes from primary sources in your research paper.

Secondary sources, to the contrary, don’t provide the first-hand account or experience of events. They summarize, cite comment, and enlarge upon primary sources.

There are also tertiary sources that represent the compilation of both primary and secondary sources. They aggregate the source materials into an overview, which allows readers to quickly familiarize themselves with this or that concept, event, phenomenon, or an idea. The examples of tertiary sources are encyclopedias, dictionaries, literature reviews, etc.

For a strong research paper, you need to include as many sources as required by your instructor. If the number of sources is not specified, it’s a good rule of thumb to use one or two sources per each page of your writing. Thus, if provide enough textual substantiation for your arguments you’ll make your paper look more objective and trustworthy.

Where to Look for Sources?

You may want to avail yourself of such handy tools as EBSCO, PubMed, Google Scholar, GoPubMed, Science.gov, DOAJ, CIA World Factbook, JURN, and JSTOR to find the types of credible sources you need.

Oftentimes, the access to articles stored in online databases, scholarly websites, and academic libraries is restricted. Should it be the case, you may want to consider purchasing access to a desired book, article, or some other publications. Alternatively, you may try accessing them courtesy of your university or college. The fact is many scholarly databases and academic websites limit the access to their materials and grant it once they make sure you’re a student of one of state education institutions.

Furthermore, you can take advantage of your college or university library when working on your research papers.  Education institutions tend to pay millions to grant students the access to the latest publications and credible sources which allow for faster and more productive researching. Feel free to dive into a vast pool of digital resources offered by your library and take advantage of a variety of academic journals, books, anthologies, and other scholarly sources that will come in handy when writing a research paper.
