ROH G1 SUPERCARD NEWS AND NOTES

By Mike Johnson on 2019-04-07 09:10:00

Ring of Honor management were absolutely thrilled with their G1 Supercard event.  There were over 15,000 in attendance and it was by far the biggest gate in the history of ROH, topping well over seven figures.

AAA's Dorian Rodan and Impact Wrestling's Ed Nordholm were in attendance at last night's G1 Supercard, sitting in a private suite.

The Great Muta surprise had been planned since early February by ROH officials.  That moment where Muta and Liger squared off was so perfect for nostalgia that it will likely go down as one of my all-time favorite memories of this weekend.

Tony Schiavone was also in attendance at the show.

There was tight security last night as no one, not even former ROH wrestlers or staff, were allowed backstage unless they were actually performing on the show.

The fan in the front row that looked to be hit by the ladder appeared to have been hit in the knee, according some readers who were sitting to the left of him.  It appeared he was taken backstage after the show.

The Briscoes and Paul Turner will be the answer to the trivia question as to what ROH performers worked the very first show on 2/23/02 and the G1 Supercard.

Merchandise lines were LONG last nigh and a number of shirts and other items sold out completely.

Gary Juster was extremely happy last night as it was the first time in his career that he was able to promote inside Madison Square Garden after many years of promoting for WCW and never being able to book the venue.

Madison Square Garden tweeted the following:

Former ROH owner and current Ambassador Cary Silkin commented this morning on the event, writing:

Enzo Amore and Big Cass took to Twitter last night with the following comments after they hopped the rail and started brawling with the Briscoes in a scene that obviously started a new storyline but was produced to look like a legitimate situation, right down to ROH's camera team working to avoid showing the incident.  In that regard, it was quite good:

Angelina Love, Velvet Sky and Mandy Leon will now be known as The Allure.

There is no current return date for Madison Square Garden.  Joe Koff told PWInsider.com last week that he is fine with the company returning to NYC in a smaller venue but they are open to seeing what happens as long as it's the best thing for ROH.  There's a realization this was a perfect storm moment that led to the MSG event.

The production screens last night were 75 feet across, obviously the biggest staging ROH had ever done.

ROH returns to Pittsburgh and Columbus next week.

New IWGP Heayweight Champion Kazuchika Okada posted the following after the show:

The G1 Supercard can be ordered for replays and really, you owe it to yourself to see the show, at Fite.TV and for those subscribing to Honorclub.

Finally, on a personal note, I attended the first-ever Ring of Honor event in February 2002 and was responsible for bringing 53 of the 400 fans that were there via a bus trip from New York City.  Last night, I attended ROH running New York City's most important and historic pro wrestling venue, Madison Square Garden.  To say that was surreal is one of the greatest understatements ever made.  There's a documentary to be made about ROH's journey from 2002 to today and I hope someone makes it some day.  There were a long way from the gym inside the Murphy Rec Center.  My, how you have grown ROH.
