During a backstage vignette on tonight's edition of WWE Smackdown Live, it was announced that Rey Mysterio will challenge Samoa Joe for the WWE United States Championship. It will be Mysterio's first appearance at Wrestlemania since competing in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at Wrestlemania 30 in New Orleans back in 2014.
Mysterio announced that his son Dominick, who appeared on tonight's episode, would be at ringside for the championship match. Mysterio's son was involved in his feud against the late Eddie Guerrero years ago and has been training as a professional wrestler for some time, so it's likely he will get physically involved at some point. Last year, Mysterio trademarked the name Principe Mysterio for his son as a potential ring name.
The match will be Samoa Joe's official Wrestlemania debut. The former Ring of Honor, WWE NXT and Impact Wrestling Champion has been on the main WWE roster for several years but has yet to work the company's flagship event. He was brought to the main roster right before Wrestlemania 33 and was not figured into the card. He was slated to compete against John Cena last year at Wrestlemania 34 but an injury suffered resulted in Joe being removed from the lineup before the match was made official. Cena instead worked against The Undertaker. If all goes well, Joe will finally appear on the company's grandest stage.
Beyond the United States title bout, the updated lineup for the 4/7 Wrestlemania 35 PPV from East Rutherford, NJ features:
*WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) vs. Seth Rollins.
*WWE Raw Women's Champion Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair.
*No Holds Barred: Batista vs. Triple H.
*WWE Women's Tag Team Champions Bayley & Sasha Banks vs. Beth Phoenix & Natalya vs. Nia Jax & Tamina.
*The Miz vs. Shane McMahon.
*Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre.
*AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton.
*Kurt Angle's farewell match vs. Baron Corbin.
*The Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal - Braun Strowman confirmed to compete.
*WWE Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy vs. Tony Nese or Cedric Alexander (challenger to be confirmed on 205 Live)
*Alexa Bliss to host.
*Elias to perform.
*SNL stars Colin Jost & Michael Che to appear.
