MAJOR LEAGUE WRESTLING NEWS AND NOTES

By Mike Johnson on 2019-01-03 10:15:00

MLW’s New Years Eve marathon on BeiN Sports resulted in MLW.com's web traffic going through the roof. MLW sources noted the cable network's commitment to MLW has been incredible in helping the promotion grow over the last year.

Tony Schiavone was out at the Rose Bowl in California doing radio work the last several days. He was working on MLW TV while also doing football coverage.  Schiavone hasn’t been this busy  in his career, probably since the late 1980s, but possibly ever.

As noted last year, Konnan has appeared in some of the highest rated segments on MLW TV.  That continued this past week when the Spanish language version of MLW: FUSION headlined by Konnan challenging MLW Champion Low Ki brought in the highest number to date.

The Low Ki vs. Konnan bout ended with Ki stabbing Konnan with something in the kidneys, playing off Konnan's legitimate kidney replacement and past health issues. MLW followed up on the angle with an announcement on their website that they were fining everyone involved, with fines levied against Low Ki ($15,000), Salina de la Renta ($15,000), Ricky Martinez ($7,500) and Hijo de LA Park ($7,500).  I am guessing we will see the fallout of that on MLW TV.

There are said to be two different Japanese promotions interested in using former MLW Middleweight Champion MJF.  He recently returned to the ring.

As noted yesterday, Davey Boy Smith Jr. signed a multi-year deal with the promotion and will appear around his New Japan Pro Wrestling dates.  MLW sources have claimed Ring of Honor pursued Smith to sign with them the night before the MLW live special on BeIN Sports.  ROH sources have denied that.

Andrew Everett was pulled from the Ladder Match on the MLW live special last month because he had popped his knee out. Everett pushed that he could still do the ladder match but MLW pulled him for safety concerns.  He instead wrestled Ariel Dominguez and as if turned out, nearly popped his knee out during a spot in that match as well.  Everett has had a reoccurring problem with his knee dating back to his Impact Wrestling run.

The date of the next live special on BeIN Sports is currently being worked on.  I keep suspecting Wrestlemania week in New York City but that is not confirmed.

Jerry Lynn and Mikey Whipwreck's podcast will be migrating to MLW.com.
