WWE MISREAD THE ROOM ON BECKY LYNCH, TITLE CHANGES ON TV, BOOKING HEELS BETTER AND MORE

My question concerns the crowd reaction to the Becky-Charlotte situation. I mean, wasn't it obvious that the audience is going to side with Lynch? She hits a low point in her career, doesn't complain, gets back up, beats everyone to earn a singles title shot, then her best friend comes back from time-off, wins one match, gets herself in the match that Becky earned and then wins the title from under her nose. Seriously, what the hell did WWE expect? Normal human logic dictates that people will feel for Becky and be compassionate about her rightful frustrations. And it's not even against Charlotte, because she was cheered right up until she won the title. I mean, Mr. McMahon himself has been in the business for 40+ years, how come nobody realizes something that obvious?

Mike Epsenhart and I talked about this in-depth on our Saturday show in the Elite section for those interested.  Yes, absolutely, they totally booked Becky as the babyface that should have won the belt.  Then her best friend gets herself in the match, out of nowhere, and walks out with the crown.  Charlotte wasn’t a heel, but the fans were invested in Becky, wanted her to win and she didn’t.  They were as mad as she was, so that makes her the face.  The fact that Creative didn’t see that coming is mind blowing to me.

Though a part of me wishes that it didn't end in a DQ, I was extremely impressed with the AJ-Joe match at Summerslam, especially regarding Joe's viciousness and his promo towards Wendy Styles. And the following Smackdown was just as good, what with Joe's awesome post-attack promo. He's exactly the kind of ass-kicking psycho heel that WWE needs more of. Why can't WWE have more of these instead of the glut of cowards and mean girls that make up most of the heels these days?

The sad and simple answer is that they aren’t booked to be a bad ass like Joe has been booked.  I would love to see more tough heels too.  It makes the storylines that lead to the matches so much better when it’s two tough people duking it out.  That is why I prefer the NXT product to the WWE product, the booking.

Do you think that WWE needs to show a world title change on Raw or Smackdown to bring back the must see feel to TV? Between Lesnar and Goldberg, the champion had rarely appeared on Raw, much less defended the title. On the Blue side, AJ has a considerable run of his own, which followed the summer of Jinder. I didn't like the hot shot approach to booking titles that Russo had during the Attitude Era and at WCW, but, when done right, a TV title change can elicit a significant fan reaction. Mankind - Rock and Goldberg - Hogan come to mind. In the golden age, the risk of a TV change was sacrificing PPV buys, especially with Hogan - Goldberg. But now, in the era of the Network, why not have a few more defenses and even the occasional change?

That’s a good point you make.  Now, the driving force for WWE revenue comes from TV rights.  I agree with you, the company should consider doing WWE/Universal Title changes on TV.  To be fair, both belts hadn’t changed in a while before last weekend and SummerSlam was the place for them to make that flip.  But going into the Fall, Pre-Rumble season, I would love to see a change take place on TV.  Joe beating AJ would be the one I could see happening.
