MLW BATTLE RIOT NEWS AND NOTES FROM NYC

By Mike Johnson on 2018-07-20 15:07:00

Some notes from last night’s Major League Wrestling Battle Riot in New York City:

MLW sold out the Melrose Ballroom with 800 plus fans. The promotion placed tickets on sale today at www.MLWTickets.com for a 10/4 return to the venue with L.A. Park coming in.  Park has appeared for the promotion in the past with a notable feud against Sabu.

Matt Striker debuted as an announcer for the company last night and called the show with Tony Schiavone.  He will be a regular going forward.

MLW owner Court Bauer considered last night’s show the biggest in the history of this incarnation of the company.  He and Dan Bynum produced the show from the production truck while Bruce Prichard and Mister Saint Laurent ran the gorilla position.

Last night will not be Kevin Sullivan’s only appearance for the company as he was involved in pre-tapes in NYC the day before the Riot Squad event.

Rich Swann, who suffered a concussion last night, was replaced in Battle Riot by Lloyd Anoa’I aka L.A. Smooth and the Tahitian Savage.  There's no word confirmed word yet on how Swann is doing.

There was a planned spot in Battle Riot for The Kodokushi Death Squad, Zeda Zhang & Su Yung, but that was pulled as Yung accompanied her husband Swann to the hospital after he was injured.

There was talk of The Sandman appearing in Battle Riot as a surprise at some point earlier this week, but he did not work the show.  I cannot confirm that he was ever booked, just that it was an idea tossed around.

Rafael Morfi of Signature Move Productions ran the logistical end of the live event.  He is also working on the Impact Wrestling PPV this Sunday and worked for WWE for many, many years.

The promotion will return to Fort Lauderdale on 9/6, headlined by a two ring, steel cage War Games match.  MLW filed for a trademark on War Games in February as they had used the concept and match back in 2003 with a match featuring The Extreme Horsemen vs. Funk’s Army, which was a tremendous match.

Gamechanger Wrestling's Brett Lauderdale and Nick Gage as well as Impact's Mike Drastic from LAX were at the event last night.

The Battle Riot special will feature:

*40 Man Battle Riot Match to earn a MLW Championship Match.

*MJF vs. Joey Ryan to determine the first-ever Middleweight Champion.

*Kotta Brazil vs. Myron Reed.

The event was taped last night in New York City.  You can read my live coverage by clicking here if you wish to know spoilers.
