ROUSEY GETTING A TITLE MATCH SO QUICKLY, RVD VS. JERICHO IN ECW & WHY IT WAS NEVER SEEN UNTIL THIS WEEK, BECKY LYNCH, SMACKDOWN MAIN EVENTS AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2018-05-24 11:00:00

I am watching the Chris Jericho vs. RVD match that WWE added to the WWE Network and I have a few questions about it – 1 – why, no commentary?  2 – Why are the fans booing these two if ECW fans are so smart to the business and 3 – Jericho wrote in his book that Paul Heyman said they had a camera issue and that’s why they never showed the match before…but there’s obviously no camera issue here.

In order, there’s no commentary because Paul Heyman opted not to use the match, so he never had Joey Styles announce over it.  The match was just going to sit there and not be used, so why waste the time to add commentary to it?  As far why WWE didn't bring Joey in now to do it, one, I don't know that the two sides have any relationship today.  Plus, it’s not like WWE is going to pay Joey to a pretty penny to come in and voice a 15-minute match twenty years plus later.

As far as the reaction RVD and Jericho got that night, the fans booed them because unlike the fans in Philly, the NYC fans (at that point at least) really were a blood and guts audience that wanted the violence and wanted to see what was presented to them on ECW, nothing else.  RVD had hardly been on ECW TV at that point.  Jericho had never been in ECW period.  They had no issue.  The fans didn't want to see a good wrestling match.  They didn't care about them as performers, so, the NYC fans rejected them.

I think that is the real reason the match was never shown until this week and the camera problems were a cover story Heyman gave to Jericho at the time, although Jericho also wrote in his book he felt that Heyman told him that because the match wasn't good.  I recall it very good at the time, but the audience ruined it, but I haven't seen it since it took place in front of my eyes, so I could be wrong.

I see Hulk Hogan is doing all sorts of charity work and was recently honored by the Boys & Girls Club.  Could this all be a strategy that softens the news of his return to WWE one day?

I’d like to think that it’s simply Hogan trying to make up for past mistakes by getting out there and helping others, but certainly the chance to return to WWE down the line is his goal (and the two sides have had conversations) so it’s possible you are right.  It’s not anything Hogan would ever admit, if it was true, however.

WWE gives us the dream natch of Styles vs. Nakamura at Wrestlemania, making hardcore fans rejoice. Since then, they gave us  Bryan vs. Styles and Bryan vs. Hardy on free TV. Next week they will give us Bryan vs. Joe. I get they were trying to beef up Smackdown to get the new TV deal. Well, they succeeded. Why are they continuing to give away dream marches on free TV still?  Not that I’m complaining, mind you.

If they believe it’s going to draw them a rating, they sure will.

With the recent influx of female stars throughout both Raw and Smackdown such as Ruby Riot, Liv Morgan, Billie Kay, Payton Royce, Ronda Rousey, Ember Moon, Sarah Logan among others including Mandy Rose do you think that Becky Lynch is being lost in the shuffle? I know she's still a part of the scene but it seems to me that she's currently lost in a crowd. What do you think?

I would agree with that to an extent.  Lynch is great, but we haven’t seen WWE really give her a sustained push or storyline in some time.  Hopefully, Money in the Bank will be the start of that changing, because I see her as the nucleus of a division, not someone who as you said, is lost in the crowd.   Unless there is an unknown (to us) issue keeping the company from using her as a central talent, I don’t understand it.

In your opinion do you think its wise to give Ronda Rousey a title shot after only being with WWE for less than a year?

Yes, for the same reason they’d give The Rock a title match if he came back.  You must maximize Rousey’s star power and the investment the company has made into her.  If they bang out a nice number or get an increase in subs because of the match or even put together a great match, mission accomplished1
