WWE DROPS FABULOUS MOOLAH NAME FROM WRESTLEMANIA BATTLE ROYAL

By Mike Johnson on 2018-03-15 15:18:00

After WWE announced plans to hold the first-ever Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal at Wrestlemania on 4/8 in New Orleans, there had been an upsurge of negative responses online to WWE's use the late Lillian Ellison's ringname.

Following Ellison's death in 2007, a number of heinous allegations were made, regarding how Ellison allegedly treated trainees and female wrestlers in her troupe when she controlled the women's pro wrestling scene.

Today, WWE responded to the negative response, making the decision to drop Moolah's name from the Battle Royal.   A statement issued by the company to PWInsider.com reads as follows:

"After further consideration, we believe it’s best to proceed with the name ‘WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal.’  What remains most important is that this historic match is part of WWE’s unwavering commitment to the Women’s Division.”

PWInsider.com has been told that the online uproar led to Snickers, which is the corporate sponsor of Wrestlemania 34, contacting WWE about the issue.  Snickers also released the following statement to WrestlingInc.com:

"We were recently made aware of the World Wrestling Entertainment Inc's (WWE) decision to honor a former wrestler during the upcoming WrestleMania 34 event. As a principle-based business that has long championed creating inclusive environments that encourage and empower everyone to reach their full potential, this is unacceptable. We are engaging with the WWE to express our disappointment."
