STAGE IS SET FOR CENA VS. UNDERTAKER, FINALLY

By Mike Johnson on 2018-03-12 20:57:00

John Cena, playing up the idea that he was going off-script, turned a promo where he played up that he wouldn't be competing at Wrestlemania 34 into a challenge to The Undertaker to face him on 4/8 in New Orleans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Cena played up the idea that the only person preventing the match from happening was Undertaker himself, claiming that he was told the match was "impossible", which is the terminology he used several weeks ago when he dropped the idea of the match.  He then cut a scathing promo on Taker, claiming he was selfish and was embarassed by his losses and was hiding, instead of trying to overcome them, like Cena does.

WWE has attempted to put Cena vs. Undertaker together at Wrestlemania several times in recent years.  It was originally earmarked for Wrestlemania 32 in Dallas, Texas, but Cena suffered a shoulder injury, leading to Cena being pulled from the match.  That injury set the stage for the return of Shane McMahon to the company, facing Undertaker in a Hell in A Cell match.

Last year, the match was again on the drawing board, but those plans were dropped in favor of Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns with Cena getting engaged to Nikki Bella on the show.

Although last year's Wrestlemania ended with what appeared to be The Undertaker's final appearance on WWE's flagship event, the stage is set for Taker to take part in one more major match at Wrestlemania 34.

The match would be the first time Cena has wrestled The Undertaker on PPV since Vengeance 2003, which saw Undertaker's American Badass persona taking on Cena, in the midst of his Dr. of Thugonomics character.  The current incarnations of Cena and Undertaker have never faced off on PPV.
