BIG BIDDING WAR FOR NEW FILM PROJECT FOR THE ROCK, UPDATE ON FAST & FURIOUS SPINOFF FILM

By Paul Jordan on 2018-02-08 08:13:00

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that "Deadpool 2" director David Leitch is the front-runner to helm still untitled "Fast and Furious" spinoff film designed focus on Dwayne Johnson's " Luke Hobbs" and Jason Statham's "Deckard Shaw" charactes."Fast" franchise veteran Chris Morgan, who wrote six of the franchise's previous films, is penning the script.  The film is currently is slated for a July 2019 release.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that there's quite the bidding war for the Dwayne Johnson film "Red Notice."   Rumblings of the action comedy began making their way around Hollywood this past week. The project would see Dwayne Johnson once again team with writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber.  The pair have worked on "Central Intelligence" and the upcoming "Skyscraper."

According to THR, Sony, Universal, Legendary, New Line Cinema and Paramount are all locked in a bidding war for the project. Given the success worldwide of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" bringing Sony about $900 million worldwide thus far, Johnson himself could make up to $25 million as the star of the film while Thurber could get a $10 million payday  to write and direct.

Not much else is known about the project at this time.  "Red Notice" refers to the highest and most serious of Interpol notices (there are eight) and concerns the arrest of wanted criminals.  Johnson would play an Interpol agent in the film.

Seven Bucks Productions will be producing the project. While this may end up more lucrative, it  is not the first bidding war for a Johnson project in recent years.  "Skyscraper", which comes out this July, had quite the bidding war last year before finally landing at Universal.
