JOHN CENA FILM NOMINATED FOR ACADEMY AWARD, CENA IN TALKS FOR VIDEO GAME FILM ADAPTION

By Mike Johnson & Paul Jordan on 2018-01-23 09:50:00

The John Cena animated film Ferdinand, which opened opposite Star Wars Episode VIII last year and was lost in the wake of that film, found some solace today when it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.  The film, which made $191 million, tells the tale of a young bull who escapes from a training camp in rural Spain after his father never returns from a showdown with a matador. Adopted by a farmgirl, Ferdinand's peaceful existence comes crashing down when the authorities return him to his former captors.   Cena voiced the title role.

Meanwhile, Variety is reporting that John Cena is in talks to star in the big screen adaptation of 90s first-person shooter videogame, "Duke Nukem." The title character is a blonde flattopped wisecracking, cigar smoking anti-hero who is attempting to save the world from aliens. The game itself was an over-the-top take on the '80s action movie genre.

The project is set up at Paramount-based Platinum Dunes, which is operated by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller. No director or writer is attached yet.

Platinum Dunes franchises include “The Purge,” “Ouija,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
