KAMALA HOSPITALIZED, SERIOUSLY ILL

By Mike Johnson on 2017-11-20 16:50:00

James "Kamala" Harris, 67, who worked for a number of promotions over the course of his career, is currently hospitalized in Oxford, MS.  According to a Facebook post from a family friend, Harris (who has been dealing with a number of health issues in recent years, including diabetes that resulted in the loss of both of his legs) is currently on life support after undergoing surgery yesterday.

Harris, who released an excellent autobiography a few years ago, headlined against Hulk Hogan for the WWF, feuded with Andre the Giant, waged war against Jerry Lawler in Memphis and was a staple of professional wrestling in the 1980s and early 1990s with a tremendously memorable "monster" character in Kamala.

Kamala was one of those hard-working journeyman talents who's colorful personality added a lot of the tapestry of professional wrestling.  On behalf of everyone associated with PWInsider.com, we'd like to express our best wishes to him and his family and invite everyone to keep him in their thoughts and prayers

Note from Mike: On a personal note, Kamala headlined the first-ever live wrestling event I ever attended, wrestling Hogan in Madison Square Garden in December 1986 and still to this day, it remains one of my favorite matches I've ever seen live.  During the prime of Hulkamania, the crowd believed so much in Kamala that when he splashed Hogan, the gasp in the crowd believing Hogan was about to lose his title was amazing, as was the roar when Hogan kicked out at the last second.   He was an absolute gentleman years later when we had him on PWInsider for an interview and the few times we've crossed paths.  That made my childhood memories that much sweeter and I sincerely wish and hope for the best.
