Tomorrow evening, WWE will fly the Starrcade banner for the first time since purchasing the rights to what was the original professional wrestling supershow as part of its March 2001 acquisition of World Championship Wrestling. The show will, appropriately enough, take place in Greensboro, NC at the Greensboro Coliseum, which housed the first Starrcade event on Thanksgiving 1983, promoted by Jim Crockett Promotions and headlined by Ric Flair challenging Harley Race for the NWA World championship inside a steel cage.
Starrcade holds a nostalgic place in the hearts of old school wrestling fans and was held on PPV from 1987 to 2000. It had traditionally been centered in Greensboro until 1987, when the decision was made to move it to Chicago as Starrcade evolved into a PPV with the decision made to originate the event from a "big city", a decision that was criticized at the time by diehard fans of Crockett Promotions. The event this weekend will mark the first Starrcade event in the venue in thirty years.
The announced lineup for the event features:
*WWE Smackdown Women's champion Charlotte Flair (with Ric Flair) vs. Natalya - Steel Cage Match.
*WWE champion AJ Styles vs. Jinder Mahal - Steel Cage Match.
*WWE Smackdown Tag Team champions The Usos vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. The New Day vs. Shelton Benjamin & Chad Gable.
*WWE United States champion Baron Corbin vs. Shinsuke Nakamura.
*Dolph Ziggler vs. Bobby Roode.
*The Revival's Dash Wilder vs. Dustin Rhodes (listed under that name, not Goldust)
*Also listed as appearing are WWE Hall of Famers The Rock N' Roll Express, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, Sin Cara, WWE Hall of Famer Ricky Steamboat and The Hardy Boyz.
The Starrcade show will go head to head with the 2017 Wrestlecade event in nearby Winston-Salem, NC.
