JEFF HARDY'S RETURN, FAMOUS FANS, BRET HART WANTING TO JOIN WCW IN 1996 AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2017-10-13 10:00:00

I just discovered the Conrad Thompson podcasts with Bruce Prichard and Tony Schiavone and I must say they are very good. On one of the pods they mention that Hall/ Nash were pushing hard for B. Hart to be the 3rd member of the NWO.. I think Prichard said his deal was ending in that time frame. So it makes some sense. Do you know how close Hart was to leaving at that time and imagine how different the wrestling landscape would’ve been. Would Hogan of ever turned heel? What would’ve happened instead of the Montreal Screwjob? So many ripple effects.

That story is 100% accurate.  If you are an Elite member, you can read the complete details in the Wrestling Lariat archives.  In the summer/fall if 1996, Bret Hart's deal was expiring and WCW was making a heavy play for him.  In the end, he decided to stay with WWF and was signed to what was supposed to be a 20 year deal that would see him close his career with the company and then move into a behind the scenes role.  A year later, in September of 1997, the company was losing so much money that Vince McMahon told Bret Hart he could no longer afford the deal and offered him the chance to go negotiate with WCW and see if he could still get the big money offer.  Hart actually got more and made arrangements to leave.  However, Hart's deal stipulated that he had creative control over how he was used the last 30 days of his run and due to his personal issues with Shawn Michaels, was not going to put Michaels over for the belt and felt that losing the belt in Canada wasn't proper either.  So, WWE went with the screwjob....and the rest was history.

I haven't seen the guy/fan that's always sitting ringside at WWE, and wears the blue shirt and red hat in a while. Is he okay?

My guess is he's around but just not as often and not sitting in a prominent seat.

Speaking of famous fans, what's the story with the infamous Vladimir?  Does he still work for WWE?

Vladimir never worked for WWE in any aspect.  He was (and still is) a big fan from the New York City area who worked hard to get ringside seats.  He's actually one of my best friends and is usually with me Wrestlemania weekend.

If you had to place a wager, when does Jeff Hardy return?

My guess is after Wrestlemania 34.

I seem to remember a movie about a guy trying to take over a wrestling company in London.  Am I insane?  This was an old film.

You are most likely thinking of classic 1950 noir film "Night and the City", featuring the story of a hustler who gets involved in the London professional wrestling scene.  It's an awesome film.  Stansilaus Zbyszko has a great featured role in it.
