9/9 NEW JAPAN ROAD TO DESTRUCTION IN TOKYO, JAPAN REPORT

By Matthew Macklin on 2017-09-09 16:05:00

Road to Destruction, Korakuen Hall, September 9:

Tomoyuki Oka, Hirai Kawato & Yuji Nagata defeated Shota Umino, Katsuyori Kitamura & Manabu Nakanishi.   Really good start to the show with this. Umino looked excellent here, showing incredible explosiveness when he came in off a hot tag. Team Nakanishi, with the size advantage controlled a lot of the match. Nagata & Nakanishi were at each other's throats again. Kawato hit a big missile dropkick to clear the way for Oka to make Umino submit to a Boston Crab.

Beretta, Jado, Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI defeated Yujiro Takahashi, Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa.   Very little of note in this one, it was a basic mid card tag. The focus was on following up on Beretta vs Yujiro from the previous show. Beretta this time got the pin with a leg hold and a bridge. After the match Bullet Club jumped CHAOS, ending with Yujiro hitting his DDT on Beretta.

Togi Makabe, Hanson & Ray Rowe defeated TAKA Michinoku, Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr.   This was all about War Machine vs KES and it was great. They have great chemistry after the matches they've had in NOAH & ROH, so it's a pity their upcoming title match also involves GOD.  Their was incredible intensity to this and lots of big power moves from four huge guys. Makabe & TAKA did very little of note until the finish where Makabe pinned TAKA after the King Kong Knee Drop.

Rocky Romero & Will Ospreay defeated BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi.   This was great! BUSHI & Himoru came out to their theme songs mixed together, so I thought this was the beginning of them as a Tag Team, so the finish was a surprise. LIJ put together some great double team moves. Ospreay was just ridiculous when he was tagged in. No matter how much I see him, he constantly leave me in awe. LIJ hit a double codebraker late in the match, which I've never seen before. Ospreay countered Hiromu's apron powerbomb into a rana and allowed Romero to hit a knee strike on BUSHI for a win. I really hope Romero doesn't get forgotten about now that his team with Beretta is done. He deserved a push and a shot at the IWGP Jr Heavyweight title.

Juice Robinson & David Finlay defeated Leo Tonga & Chase Owens.  This match really over delivered. Tonga was booked excellently again. He was only in the ring when he had to be and looked good in everything he did. Owens did a great job carrying the his team and the match and really impressed. Tonga looked like a beast late in the match and got a great near fall after a Samoan Drop.  Tonga booted Owens by accident, leaving Juice to hit the Pulp Friction on Tonga to pick up the win.

SANADA, EVIL & Tetsuya Naito defeated Toru Yano, Kazuchika Okada & Tomohiro Ishii.  Pretty good match where we got to preview two big upcoming LIJ vs CHAOS matches. Ishii & SANADA had a good exchange and Naito then toyed with him. EVIL & Okada went back and forth. SANADA & Yano were the last two legal men. Yano tried all his trickery, but he was beaten at his own game with a low blow and roll up.

Elimination Match: Michael Elgin, Hiroshi Tanahashi, KUSHIDA, Ryusuke Taguchi & Ricochet defeated Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Takashi Iizuka.   Suzuki Gun went after the arm of Tanahashi, just torturing it in only a way that Minoru Suzuki can. Ricochet came in off the hot tag and looks good until he was struck by Taichi's cane. He was then caught in a small package by Kanemaru and eliminated.  Kanemaru then said goodbye when he was pinned after a sloppy ass attack From Taguchi. Taguchi ate a face full of whiskey and was pinned by Taichi after a Gedo Clutch.

KUSHIDA knocked Taichi off the apron and then went back and forth with Desperado. They had a great exchange with lots of excellent counters. Iizuka and his iron fingers got involved to help Desperado pin the Jr champion. Tanahashi & Desperado battled to the apron with Desperado getting knocked off. Iizuka then caught Tanahashi from behind to eliminate him. This left Elgin in a two on one situation vs Iizuka & Suzuki. He dusted Iizuka off with and Elgin Bomb. He and Suzuki slapped the hell out of each other and a brawl broke out between everyone that had been eliminated. Ricochet took out the Suzuki Gun crew with a dive, which left Elgin & Suzuki alone. Elgin eliminated Suzuki after an enzuigiri off the apron. Elgin challenges Suzuki for the NEVER Openweight Championship in a lumberjack match tomorrow.
