WHAT PR PROFESSIONALS CAN LEARN FROM PRO WRESTLERS

By Kendall Jenkins on 2017-05-31 07:48:00

PR professionals tell the story of a brand or company.  They are experts in growing, guiding and establishing a company and portraying a specific image to the world.  In the wrestling world, things are much the same.  In WWE, for example, it is as much about the personality and brand of a wrestler as it is about their talent.  In fact, those currently taking a master in communications degree with the aim of entering into the world of PR can learn a lot from professional wrestlers.  In this article, we’ll take a look at some of them.

The Story Matters

In wrestling, the story matters just as much as how the wrestler performs.  Pro wrestlers will do as much as possible to elicit some kind of emotion from the audience – love them or hate them, they get people talking.  In PR, the story matters as well.  If you want to encourage somebody to buy something or to trust a brand, you need to elicit some kind of emotion from them.  Think about how you tell your story, and what you could do to incite more emotion.  Do this, and you have won half the battle.

Taking Risks is Important

There are many different moves in wrestling, and pro wrestlers don’t think twice about shaking things up if it gives them a chance of beating their opponent.  Yes, they might lose, but the risk is usually worth taking.  It’s the same in PR.  Your online MCM degree will teach you the skills you need to succeed, but that doesn’t mean that you need to rely on these skills forever.  Push yourself to try something different, and see whether the results pay off.  The top PR companies are never afraid of taking things to the next level.

Failure Will Happen

Pro wrestlers don’t win every match they take part in – failure will happen, and is expected.  It’s how they deal with this failure that matters.  Those who are professionals will learn from their mistakes and look at ways they can improve.  They may also ask their coaches for advice.  In PR, the same is true.  You will launch some bad campaigns, it’s to be expected, but it’s how you deal with the aftermath that is important.  Look at what went wrong and speak to other business professionals about what you could have done differently.  Then keep this in mind for the future.

You Need to Evolve

Take a look back at the pro wrestlers of the 90s, and you’ll see a huge difference today.  The moves were different, the costumes were different, and the way they branded themselves was also different.  In PR, you also need to evolve with the times.  You can’t expect to learn everything you need to know from your online MCM program – you need to continue learning after you establish a career.  This is the only way that you will be able to compete with other PR professionals.

Can you think of any other things PR professionals can learn from pro wrestlers?
