OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR NETFLIX COMEDY 'GLOW' RELEASED, SERIES TO DEBUT NEXT MONTH

By Mike Johnson on 2017-05-15 10:40:00

Netflix released the first official trailer for their new comedy GLOW, which will begin streaming on the service on 6/23:

GLOW, will be a 10 episode comedy, set in the 80s, of an actress (Alison Brie, NBC's Community) who uses the promotion and pro wrestling as her last-ditch attempt to become a star.  Marc Maron will also be a lead for the series.

Official promotional material for the series reads: "Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women's wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life turns out not to be what it seems. At the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling super stardom."

The series is loosely based on the 1980s female wrestling league The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which aired for several years and even did a national tour based on the success of the series' syndicated TV series.   Created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange is the New Black), GLOW was inspired by the documentary on the original promotion, which was released in 2012.    That documentary is currently available for streaming on Netflix as well.

GLOW will be executive produced by Orange Is the New Black creator/executive producer Jenji Kohan and co-executive producer Tara Herrmann.

Chavo Guerrero Jr. oversaw the wrestling sequences for the series while a number of personalities from the pro wrestling world, including former WWE star Alex Riley and former WWE and Impact star Kia Stevens, best known as Awesome Kong and Kharma, will be featured in the series.
