STYLES VS. REIGNS TEARS DOWN THE HOUSE, A FORMER WWE CHAMPION RETURNS, CLASSIC IC TITLE BOUT & MORE: WWE EXTREME RULES PPV COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-05-22 20:00:00

Welcome to PWInsider.com's ongoing coverage of the 2016 WWE Extreme Rules PPV from Newark, NJ!

KICKOFF SHOW

Renee Young, Jerry Lawler, Corey Graves and Booker T are the panel this week.

Tom Phillips will have Rusev and Lana in the social media lounge for a Q&A later.

They aired a video promoted the Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho Asylum match.

They discussed the Asylum match.

They aired a video piece on Charlotte vs. Natalya.

Paige and Becky Lynch joined the Panel.  Paige said that Charlotte can figure out ways to win without her father there because she's resourceful.  Lynch said that Charlotte has 11 straight victories on PPV but her greatest asset will be sitting backstage in the locker room.  Booker T said the champ is genetically inclined.  They painted the picture that it was the Sharpshooter vs. The Figure 8.  Paige said Charlotte would win because she's a sneaky girl.  Jerry Lawler said the figure four hurts worse than the Sharpshooter.  Lynch said Natalya has never been this focused and she's going to get the championship.  Booker said that this could be Natalya's last shot at the title and it's going to come down to who wants it the most and he feels that's Natalya.

The Dudley Boyz came to the ring.  The Dudleys took the ring mic.  New Jersey chanted for ECW.  Bubba and D-Von said that it's the most extreme night of the year and said people might remember ECW.  They led fans in a chant for the company and then said that the fans needed to stop being sheep and doing what they were told.  They said when they left ECW, it went in the toilet and said that when they left, they killed it.  Bubba said that the New Era stars are going to have their careers head straight to the toilet as well.

They said they weren't on Extreme Rules because they were above Extreme.  Bubba asked if they could please get out of New Jersey.  Colin Cassady's music played and out came Big Cass.  The crowd chanted, "How You Doing?"  He said Bubba won't ask D-Von to get the table because he ate the table and everything on it.  He named all the things Bubba ate and every time, the audience said, "How you doing?" in response.

Cass said that are extremely wrong about the athletes of the New Era, because they will do exactly what The Dudleys did in Bingo Halls and Ballrooms but they do it better and in front of millions of people every week.  He said the Dudleys were full of crap and that he was seven feet tall and you can't teach that.  He entered the ring but the Dudleys attacked him.  The crowd chanted for Enzo.  Cass sidestepped a Bubba charge and D-Von got taken out.  He nailed a big boot on Bubba and hit the East River Crossing on D-Von.

As the Dudleys recovered, Cass told them they were S-A-W-F-T!

Decent segment to continue the issue between the two sides.  It made sense to have Cass make an appearance in his "home market" so to speak.

As we reported in the Elite section this morning, Enzo Amore is backstage at the PPV.

Jojo interviewed WWE Intercontinental champion The Miz and Marsye.  He boasted about all his great acting endeavors, then did a monolouge based on the film "Miracle" where he was tired of hearing about the New Era and said it was his time.  He dared them to take his title.  Marsye clapped emphatically for her husband.  They even did a "take two" where Miz cut the promo again as they played dramatic, inspirational music underneath.  Okaaaaaaay.

Backstage, Rusev and Lana joined Tom Phillips.  Lana complained the Hashtag wasn't for Rusev and Lana.  Rusev was asked about Kalisto's speed.  He didn't care about it because he has strength.  He said that Kalisto was a cheater and a liar.  His accent was coming and going.  They were asked their favorite thing about America.  Rusev said the opportunity to make money because he likes money.  He said Americans are too lazy to take their opportunities, so he takes it.  Lana promised everyone will bow down to the greatest United States champion of all time, Rusev.

They aired a video feature on AJ Styles vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight championship.

No DQ: Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin

They had the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at ringside and noted it would have been Andre's birthday last week.

They went right at it.  Ziggler drilled Corbin with right hands and tried to whip him out of the corner but Corbin reversed and sent him to the floor.  Ziggler was pulled into the ringpost.  Back in the ring, he nailed a series of elbows in the corner.   He tied up Ziggler in the ropes and drilled him with a right hand.  He measure him and struck Ziggler again.

Corbin manhandled Ziggler and used a half nelson.  He charged Ziggler but was sent to the floor.  When he returned Ziggler nailed a series of clotheslines and a neckbreaker.  Corbin rolled oiut of the ring to the floor and snapped Ziggler acrioss the ropes.  Ziggler came back with a nice dropkick and dropped an elbow for a two count.

Zigger went for the Zig Zag but got caught.  Corbin went for a powerbomb but Ziggler slipped through for a sunset flip for a two count.  Corbin drilled him with a spin around slam for a close two count.   Corbin went for a powerbomb out of the corner but Ziggler slipped out and nailed a tornado DDT and the Famouser for another close two count.

Ziggler drilled him with a series of headbutts but Corbin caught him with an uppercut to the groin, which is legal due to the No DQ stipulation.  The announcers wondered whether Ziggler would be able to continue.  Corbin nailed the End of Days and scored the pin.

Your winner, Baron Corbin!

The match was OK.

They showed the announcers coming out as the Kickoff went off the air,

WWE EXTREME RULES 2016 PPV

The PPV is being sponsored by the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, which Sheamus has a role in.

Lots of pyro.  Michael Cole welcomed us to the PPV.

The Usos vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson: Tornado Tag

They began brawling in the aisle and into the ring as all men are legal.     The Usos tossed Karl to the floor and nailed a series of splashes in the corner on Gallows, then sent him to the floor  Anderson sent one of the Usos into the crowd when he charged.   That allows them to doubleteam Jey Uso.  Jimmy Uso returned with a dive over the top onto the Club.

Jey tossed Anderson into the ring and nailed a flying bodypress for a two count.  Gallows sent Jimmy into the ringpost on the floor.  Gallows held one of the Usos on his corner and Anderson nailed the Boot of Doom off the apron.   Anderson and Gallows nailed a series of running splashes in the corner.  They set up for a Doomsday Device style double team move off the ropes but The Usos fought them off.  Anderson cut off Jimmy with a clothesline on the floor.  Anderson drilled Jey with a stiff knee to the head for a two count.

Anderson whipped Jey into a big boot from Gallows for another two count.  Gallows picked up Jey for the Boot of Doom but Jimmy grabbed his leg as he rebounded.  Anderson was warded off.  The Usos nailed double superkicks on Gallows.  The Usos went for stereo splashes off the ropes but Anderson shoved on of them off the top to the floor.  They double teamed the remaining Uso and Anderson caught a two count after a spinebuster.

On the floor, Anderson charged Jey Usos but he was kicked in the face.    Usos ran and did the back splash against the railing but was cut off by a Gallows clothesline.  Jey was sent over the barricade and into the crowd.   Gallows grabbed the ring bell from ringside.  They specified it was No DQ.  He brought the bell into the ring but Jimmy Uso caught him with a superkick.  Uso went to the top for a splash but Gallows moved and Usos crashed atop the ring bell.  They nailed the Legendkiller and scored the pinfall.

Your winners, Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson!

A good back and forth brawl.  I think Anderson had more of a chance to show what he was about here then he has had the chance to do thus far in his WWE tenure.

The referees walked out the Usos as the announcers wondered what this meant for the main event tonight, because there was no question the Club would get involved during Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles.

WWE United States champion Kalisto vs. Rusev with Lana

They showed the clip of Rusev working over Kalisto's back.  Lana came to the ring to introduce Rusev personally.

Kalisto tried to use his speed and went for a corkscrew off the ropes but was shut down immediately.  Rusev stomped the hell out of him in the corner and ran Kalisto into the buckles.  He maintained control on the champion, scoring several pins before cinching in a bearhug.  He rode Kalisto to the mat with it as the champ struggled to make it to the ropes to break the hold.

Rusev stopped him and placed him in a Human Torture Rack.  The announcers noted it was the move Lex Luger made famous.  Kalisto drilled him in the side of the head with several knees and slipped behind Rusev with a sleeper.  Rusev finally slammed Kalisto backwards to break the hold.  Kalisto came off the ropes with a tornado DDT.  Kalisto unloaded with a series of knees and kicks.  He came off the ropes with the springboard corkscrew and a hurancanrana for a two count.

Kalisto ducked a Rusev charge and pulled down the ropes, sending him over the top to the floor  Kalisto dove through the ropes and nailed a headscissors into the ring steps on Rusev.  Back in the ring, Kalisto was nailed with a splash off the ropes for another two count.   Kalisto went for the Salina del Sol but Rusev slipped out to the floor.  Kalisto nailed a moonsault to the floor on Rusev.

Kalisto ascended to the top rope but was caught and slammed to the outside on the apron.  Ouch!   The referee called for a medical attendant to check Kalisto with the idea that he was hurt and might not be able to continue.  Rusev dragged him away and began stomping on him.  The referee held him away.  Rusev did the same again but was pushed away.  Rusev said the hell with it and locked him in the Accolade and pulled him all the way back.  It looked brutal and Kalisto immediately and furiously tapped.

Your winner and new WWE United States champion, Rusev!

Kalisto was in the ring for a long time after being checked by officials.

Good match with a good story.  Rusev looked the most dominant and monstrous he has in forever.  My guess is John Cena is next for him.  Kalisto did a great job here as well.
