AS RUMORS SWIRL, HERE'S WHEN JOHN CENA WOULD BE FREE TO POTENTIALLY RETURN TO WWE

By Mike Johnson on 2021-05-23 18:21:00

Over the last week or so, there's been a rumor making the rounds that WWE is working on John Cena returning to the company in some capacity when they return to live dates in front of audiences.

While PWInsider.com has not been able to 100% confirm whether there is anything to this at this time, we can confirm that production on Cena's HBO Max series Peacemaker is slated to end on 7/6 in Vancouver, British Columbia, unless there is an unforeseen circumstance that leads to a delay in shooting.

In September 2020, HBO Max ordered an eight-episode first season for the series as a spinoff for the forthcoming Suicide Squad film starring Cena with James Gunn, the writer and director of Squad and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy returning to write and direct the series.  The series will explore Peacemaker's background before the Suicide Squad film.

In promotional material for the film, Cena has described this take on Peacemaker as a "douchey Captain America."  The Suicide Squad film is slated for a August 6, 2021 release and is the second Squad film, based on the DC Comics series with the premise of the United States government forcing incarcerated super-villains to go on suicide missions under threat of death.

Cena last appeared for WWE, as a competitor, at Wrestlemania 36, facing Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Funhouse Match, a bout where Cena literally disappeared from WWE storylines.  He most recently popped up as part of WWE's announcement of three future Wrestlemania events through 2023 but announced that due to the current pandemic he would not appear at Wrestlemania 37 due to quarantine requirements that would force the shutdown of the series' production.    Wrestlemania 37 was the first Mania since Wrestlemania 19 back in 2003 that didn't feature a Cena appearance.

In advance of the series and film, the Peacemaker character will be positioned stronger in DC Comics' Suicide Squad comic series.  The character was originally published by Charlton Comics in November 1966 but acquired by DC as part of a purchase of that company back in 1985.   Writer Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette created the original version of the character.

While Cena will certainly have post-production responsibilities for the Peacemaker series, he'll be free to return to the United States as of early July, which at least leaves the possibility of him being available for WWE appearances in some fashion.
