BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM WWE AND TNA; PLUS A LOOK BACK AT THE TOTALS ON TELEVISION AND PAY PER VIEW IN JUNE

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-07-06 16:00:00
We are now at the halfway point of the year and it is time to take a look back at the past month on television. With the third fewest hours of wrestling on television in a month this year, we had the second lowest wrestling total for the year. With 704 minutes of wrestling, June was 60 minutes ahead of April, which saw the usual annual lack of wrestling for Wrestlemania week.

With a fifth week for Raw, the only show to have such luck to air an extra week, the show returned over 200 minutes after a two month break from those lofty totals. The 241 minutes was still only the second highest total for a month, falling short of February’s 249 minutes. Raw also had their highest total for the amount of matches in a month with 45, or an average of 9 per show.

Smackdown finished in second place with just more than half the amount of wrestling. Smackdown had 129 minutes of wrestling, down 23 minutes from last month and better than only March and April. The 29 matches this month were down from last month’s high of 35 matches.

Impact was the only other show to finish with more than 100 minutes of wrestling, ending the month with exactly 100 minutes of wrestling. The 18 matches was tied for the second fewest in a month. Impact has had an interesting pattern in 2014 with each quarter having the best performance in the first month followed by a steady drop in the next two months.

NXT finished in fourth place with 97 minutes of wrestling, its second best month of the year and only 4 minutes behind its January total. The 18 matches in June was the second lowest total for a month, beating only February which had the NXT Arrival show. Other than February, every month has been in a 13 minute range of 88 to 101 minutes of wrestling.

Main Event finished in fifth place with 67 minutes of wrestling, its lowest total for a month since April 2013. Main Event has seen a drop over the last four months as we have seen the amount of wrestling on this show drop from 108 minutes in March to its total for June. Main Event also had its fewest matches in a month with 11. Is Main Event becoming the Tuesday night version of Superstars or will we return to the show that most people looked forward to each week for the best matches from the people being ignored on Raw and Smackdown.

Superstars finished in sixth place this month only because there was only one episode of Ring of Honor to air in June. While the averages remain consistent for the year, the 46 minutes of wrestling was the fourth highest total for the year. However, it is only one minute less than the third highest total. The eight matches continue the typical two match per show average.

Finishing in last place is Ring of Honor with only 24 minutes from its one show. It is the second best of the one episode months for the company and is the second lowest total for the year. The three matches ties the other one show months for the lowest amount in a month.

The 132 matches in June was the third highest total and was one more than March’s total. The 19 ten minute matches tied for the second lowest total in a month while the 18 one minute matches was double the highest amount prior to June. The average match length in June was 5.33 minutes, the second lowest for the year and down from May’s 5.35 minutes per match. The average amount of wrestling per hour on television in June was exactly 16 minutes. That is the second lowest total of the year, beating only April’s average.

June’s pay per view offerings provided us with the most wrestling on pay per view thanks to the addition of Ring of Honor to the ‘traditional’ pay per view market and two pay per views from WWE. The four pay per views gave us 380 minutes of wrestling in 32 matches over the 12 broadcast hours.

The addition of the pay per view totals to the television totals give us a total of 1,084 minutes of wrestling in 164 matches. The average match was 6.61 minutes and there was an average of 19.36 minutes of wrestling per hour. The lack of wrestling on the TNA pay per view compared to the others was made up for by the totals from the Ring of Honor pay per view.

For the year, we have seen 4,501 minutes of wrestling in 799 matches over 272 hours of programming. When you add the pay per views for the year, the totals increase to 5,481 minutes of wrestling in 871 matches over 303 hours of wrestling.
