BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING ON TELEVISION FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH

By Richard Trionfo on 2012-05-02 09:31:00
Raw had its tenth three hour show since I started this column and it was enough to give Raw its second straight victory. Other than Raw, it was a strong week of wrestling for the internet shows because Superstars finished in second and NXT finished third. In a slightly disappointing result, the other two shows that air for two hours could not break the twenty minute wrestling barrier.

Smackdown had a very uncharacteristic total of seventeen minutes which featured four two minute matches and two one minute matches. The only saving grace for the week was a seven minute match. Seven minutes was also the length of the longest match for Impact.

While Smackdown reached the Ray Bourque or Pierre Turgeon level of seventy-seven one minute matches, Raw remains equal with the Great One at ninety-nine one minute matches. With an average of just under two one minute matches per week over the first one hundred weeks of this column, We have seen a proliferation of one minute matches with an average of almost three and a quarter one minute matches per week in the last fourteen weeks (45 in 14 weeks versus 198 in 100 weeks)

On the other hand, we have seen a slight drop in ten minute matches over the last fourteen weeks. With an average of two and three quarter ten minute matches over the last three and a half months, it is down from an average of just over three per week (38 in 14 weeks versus 304 in 100 weeks).

Ring of Honor passed nineteen hundred hours as they try to become the fifth show to hit that level, leaving NXT as the only one below that total. Raw moves closer to three thousand minutes as they expand their lead over third place Impact, which is close to twenty-nine hundred minutes and should break it next week.

Next week, NXT should break an important barrier when they have their three hundredth match. Season Five, assuming it is still considering it a season show, will pass one thousand minutes next week unless they ignore wrestling.

With the recent weeks of short match lengths, Smackdown is in danger of falling below five minutes. In the last fourteen weeks, the average match length has dropped by .15 minutes. Superstars is trying to buck the trend and reach the six minute per match average.

Since there was no bell to start the Eric Bischoff/Jeremy Borash ‘match’, it will not be included in the totals.

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).
