RANDY ORTON TITLE WIN: WWE RAW RATINGS KILLER OR JUST A COINCIDENCE?

By Buck Woodward on 2009-05-07 15:09:50

Brian Paige sent along word that every time Randy Orton has won the WWE or World Championship on a WWE PPV, the following week the Raw rating dropped.  I went and pulled up the numbers for two weeks prior and two weeks after every Orton title win on PPV, and he is correct.

You could chalk it up to coincidence, but it is bizarre that after every PPV where Orton has won a title, the rating has dropped.  I guess if you want to find a positive, it dropped less in 2009 (.3) than it did in 2007 (.4) or in 2004 (.5).  On the negative side, the rating usually showed some rebound the following week in 2004 and 2007, but this time, the rating dropped again.

Personally, I don't think the ratings can ever be pinned on one wrestler (so please Orton fans, no need to send that hate mail), but it certainly is interesting that when Orton is given the ball, people tune out.  Here are the numbers:

2009

April 13th - Raw does a 3.7 rating.

April 20th - Raw does a 3.7 rating.

April 26th - Randy Orton defeats Triple H for the WWE Title.

April 27th - Raw does a 3.4 rating.

May 4th - Raw does a 3.3. rating.

2007

September 24th - Raw does a 3.4 rating.

October 1st - Raw does a 3.2 rating.

October 7th - Randy Orton defeats Triple H for the WWE Title.

October 8th - Raw does a 2.8 rating.

October 15th - Raw does a 3.3 rating.

2004

August 2nd - Raw does a 3.8 rating.

August 9th - Raw does a 3.9 rating.

August 15th - Randy Orton defeats Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Title.

August 16th - Raw does a 3.4 rating.

August 23rd - Raw does a 3.6 rating.
