MORE DETAILS ON JBL-OVW STORY (UPDATED)

By Mike Johnson on 2009-03-08 21:00:00

As reported earlier today, former WWE champion JBL announced that he was investing into former WWE developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling today on the WWE Universe blog website.  JBL had previously made a sizeable investment into the company by becoming a corporate sponsor via his Layfield Energy Drinks company.

The story making the way around the OVW area is that JBL is interested in purchasing a piece of the company with the idea of Danny Davis running the day to day operations.  Davis had lost considerable money in the company since WWE pulled their deal to subsidize the company, partially due to the cost of renovations to the Danny Davis Arena, the loss of their primary TV outlet in Louisville and the loss of live events at the local Six Flags park, which brought in more than $50 thousand in revenue for the compamy.

As part of the story, there has been talk making the rounds that JBL is looking into OVW as a potential project for when he does retire from the ring, with the idea that he would move to Louisville and help oversee the company. I've also heard JBL is looking into promoting Mixed Martial Arts events in the Louisville area as well. I can't imagine him really moving out of NYC for Louisville, but you never know.

For those who are wondering if this might be a sign that WWE might be looking towards making OVW an official developmental area again, there's always that possibility down the line but nothing has been discussed in that regard.  There are a number of people who feel that if JBL is closely involved with running the company, it's more likely that WWE would reconsider having an official relationship, especially if Florida Championship Wrestling fails to follow the track record of creating top names (John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, etc.) that were developed in OVW.

As a follow-up to my article about JBL looking into promoting MMA down the line, Devin Cutting sent word that the following was posted on the OVW website:

Danny Davis has unleashed the Vyper Fight League (VFL), an all new fighting organization to begin hosting events at the Davis Arena this April. The VFL is going to revolutionize Mixed Martial Arts just like OVW revolutionized Professional Wrestling. Be a part of the historic rise of the Vyper  Fight League!
