A video package on the Edge-Orton rivalry was shown.

Intercontinental Champion Randy Orton vs. Edge.

The two locked up, with a short "Let's Go Orton" chant coming from part of the crowd.  Orton applied a side headlock, but Edge turned it into a top wristlock and grabbed his own headlock. Edge hit a shoulderblock, but Orton grabbed a wristlock. Edge reversed the hold and grabbed a headlock again.  Orton shoved Edge off and leapfrogged him, but Edge hit a shoulderblock again. Orton had quite a bit of fan support in Hartford. Edge and Orton criss-crossed the ring, to the boos of the fans, then Edge hit a shoulderblock and grabbed a side mare.  Orton struggled in Edge's side headlock and eventually broke out, but Edge hit a series of shoulderblocks and Orton went to the floor for a breather.

Orton teased that he was walking out, and Edge went after him.  Edge dragged Orton back to ringside and rammed him into the ring apron. Back in the ring, Orton sidestepped a charging Edge and sent him to the floor. Orton rammed Edge into the apron, then suplexed him back into the ring. Orton raked the laces of his boot against Edge's face. Orton hit a forearm and choked Edge against the middle rope.  Orton stomped Edge, and hit a series of forearms.  The crowd was less supportive of Orton now than they were earlier. Orton applied a keylock/chinlock variation. Edge punched out of the hold, then hit a flying forearm and a pair of clotheslines.  Randy put the brakes on off a whip, then Edge clotheslined Orton over the top rope and to the floor. Edge hit a baseball slide, then a clothesline off the ring apron.

The support for Orton was picking up again, as they got back into the ring.  Edge hit a top rope dropkick for a two count. Edge measured for a spear, but Randy kicked him as he charged, then hit a side neckbreaker for a two count. Randy elbowed Edge as his head was hanging off the ring apron.  There was a brief "Let's Go Edge" chant.  Orton choked Edge on the bottom rope, then blatantly choked him. Orton kicked Edge in the back of the neck. "Let's Go Orton" started up again, and Orton heeled them, screaming "Shut your freaking mouths, I don't need you".  Orton legdropped Edge for a two count. Edge booted a charging Orton, then hit a series of forearms.  Orton hit a knee to the gut and then dropped a knee to the throat before grinding it in.

Orton hit a standing dropkick for a two count, then applied a reverse chinlock.  Edge battled up, and fought his way out of the hold, but Orton shoved Edge to the mat and hit a legdrop for a two count. Orton pounded Edge in the chest, then went back to his reverse chinlock. The fans began chanting "boring", as Orton grapevined the leg and continued to work the hold. Edge battled up again, hitting a forearm and a cross bodyblock for two.  Edge rolled up Orton for another two, then Orton hit a clothesline to stop his momentum.

Orton jumped off the second rope, but Edge dropkicked him on the way down.  Orton reversed a whip and went for a hiptoss, but Edge blocked it and hit a neckbreaker. Both men were down, and as they got to their knees, they exchanged forearms.  Edge got the better of it and hit a side Russian legsweep for a two count. Orton reversed a whip and went for a dropkick, but Edge put the brakes on, then catapulted Orton into the turnbuckles.  Edge hit a reverse facebuster and covered Orton for a two count. Edge went to the top rope, but Orton met him there.  They battled, and Edge awkwardly dropped Orton across the ropes.  Edge hit a top rope bodypress, but Orton rolled through and scored a two count.  Orton poked Edge in the eyes and went to unlace a turnbuckle.  The referee missed Edge's small package cover as he tried to fix the turnbuckle.  Edge got a two count.  Another roll up for two, then Orton hit a dropkick. Edge blocked a shoulderblock and hit an Impaler DDT for a two count.

Edge pounded Orton in a corner, but Orton grabbed Edge in a Hot Shot on the exposed turnbuckle and used the ropes for a two count.  Orton went for an RKO, but Edge shoved Orton off into a corner.  Edge charged for a spear, but Orton leapfrogged it and Edge ran into the corner.  Orton went for the RKO, but Edge turned it into a backslide for two.  Orton kicked out, and went for the RKO, but Edge shoved Orton into the exposed corner and hit the spear for the pin at the twenty seven minute mark.  Crowd was very much into the final minutes of the match.

Winner and new Intercontinental Champion: Edge.

Orton looked like he was going to cry as he left the ring.  The fans sang "Hey Hey Goodbye" and razzed Orton as he left the ring.
