MR. HUGHES REVEALS THE FAMOUS PROMOTER WHO PUSHED TO GIVE HIM A WCW WORLD TITLE RUN AND THE TOP WRESTLER WHO TURNED DOWN THE IDEA

By WorldWrestlingInsanity.com on 2008-09-28 09:32:55

For over two decades, he's been the man wrestling's top stars have used to guard their personal well being.  From Chris Jericho to Triple H to Lex Luger, they've all had him on speed dial.  Now, the hard-hitting Mr. Hughes has dialed in to ClubWWI.com for a 37 minute shoot interview like only he can deliver.

Since his early days as the Big Cat, Curtis Hughes has built a reputation on being tough as nails and speaking few words.  Because of this, few know the full story on many aspects of his career...until now. He spoke plainly with James Guttman on ClubWWI.com about it all including: Clearing Up Misconceptions About The Origins Of The "Big Cat" Gimmick, Why Chyna Took His Spot As Triple H's Bodyguard, The Bill Watts Edict That Almost Killed The Mr. Hughes Gimmick, The Gimmick He Pitched WWF That They Gave To a Debuting Chris Jericho, Punching Jerry Lawler's Girlfriend, Stealing Undertaker's Urn, Junkyard Dog, The York Foundation, His ECW Run, Hardcore Wrestling, Possibilities of a TNA Jump, Training Young Wrestlers, and More.

One of the most interesting topics that came up during the discussion was about the WCW Title run of Lex Luger.  At the time, Ric Flair had just left the company and Luger, a babyface, was set to square off against Barry Windham at the Bash on PPV.  As the match came to a close, Luger turned heel and joined up with the legendary Harley Race.  The duo was joined by Hughes and started a new villainous stable designed to look out for the new Champion.  That doesn't mean there weren't plans to perhaps break the group up at some point.  In fact, James heard about such plans.  They included giving Curtis a WCW Title run.  JG asked him about during the ClubWWI.com shoot and Hughes gave the full story...

"Right.  Yeah.  That was true.  Yeah…One day, Paul E (Heyman), he used to put a lot of input as far as angles and do some things as far as try to help guys get over; tell them what they needed to do to get over better and so on and so forth.  One day, Paul E went to the booker and told him that he had a great idea that he thought would make a little money, draw a lot of people, and all this.  Of course he told them what he had in mind.  He said, 'Yeah.  Mr. Hughes – he's the bodyguard for Luger.  Him and Harley Race, all three of those guys are running together.  Why don't you just have Mr. Hughes turn on Luger after Luger gets the belt.  Then those guys can travel the country and have a feud and Mr. Hughes can get the belt.   Travel around the country and eventually (Luger will) get it back on the pay-per-view?'  Something to that effect.  But Luger didn't want to go for it and that's why it never happened."
Hughes speaks at length about Heyman including when they worked together in the original ECW,  his thoughts on the cult promotion, and much more.

Aside from Mr. Hughes over 130 star interviews are available on ClubWWI.com for less than five dollars a month.
