SABU ANNOUNCES HE IS ENDING IN-RING CAREER

By Mike Johnson on 2021-11-05 10:13:00

Former ECW World Champion Sabu, citing a back injury that has haunted him over the last year, announced he is ending his in-ring career.  One of the most influential and important performers of the 1990s, Sabu told WSI | Wrestling Shoot Interviews, that he has probably wrestled his final match after his body didn't hold up during a bout a couple of weeks earlier.

In discussing the decision, Sabu commented, "I'm not doing real good. I hurt my back about a year ago and it's still been hurting. I wrestled a couple of weeks ago but I shouldn't have. I've only wrestled like twice in the last year [and] I only went to the gym a couple of times the last year 'cause I hurt my back. I'm probably not gonna wrestle no more... I'm probably just gonna do autograph signings and personal appearance-type stuff."

When asked if there was anybody who would inspire him to get back in the ring for one final match, Sabu commented, I'd definitely get back in the ring for Brock Lesnar, I'd love to wrestle him. Especially if it was my final match, I'd love to wrestle him... He's the best, he's a shooter, he's a good worker, he's my kind of opponent. I like big guys, I like wrestling big guys. I don't like wrestling guys like me because it's not that interesting. It's more interesting wrestling a guy like me against a guy like Brock Lesnar."

Sabu, 57, was trained by his Uncle the Original Sheik and broke into professional wrestling in 1984.  He first made waves competing for FMW in Japan, which led to him and his unique (for the time) breaking of tables becoming one of the hottest attractions in 1993 when he began wrestling regularly for ECW.  Easily one of the top ECW stars of all time, Sabu main evented the first-ever ECW PPV Barely Legal against Taz and had memorable feuds with Mick Foley, Rob Van Dam, The Dudley Boyz, Terry Funk, Shane Douglas, The Public Enemy and many others.

Sabu also worked for New Japan, WCW and WWE over the course of his career.

A true maverick, he was also well known for giving back to others behind the scenes and helping to faciliate them getting work, never wanting to get credit for it.  The current landscape of professional wrestling would not exist today with Sabu, and one would have to be ignorant to think otherwise.
