AEW DEBUTS IN NYC THIS WEEK, COMPLETE DETAILS AND A LOOK AT WHAT THEY WILL ACCOMPLISH

By Mike Johnson on 2021-09-20 09:30:00

This week should prove to be the highest profile week in the history of All Elite Wrestling.  The promotion is all but guaranteed to sell out in the area of 19,000 tickets at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium in Flushing, Queens, NY, becoming the first promotion to ever run the venerated Stadium but also outdraw WWE in the New York City market.  No other promotion - not WCW, not Ring of Honor, no one can lay claim to that accomplishment.

One would think there will be a ton of local NYC media spotlighting the promotion.  Locally, there are already some unique marketing including sidewalk art promoting the Dynamite Grand Slam day and time on TNT.

What is interesting, especially as a New Yorker, is hearing from so many fans who haven't gone to a live show in a long time and even family members and friends who barely ever had a passing interest in pro wrestling, who are attending the show.  AEW has grabbed the interest of those who had previously dismissed pro wrestling as something they used to love and brought them back into the fold and has even attracted those who were never even passing fans to begin with and made them interested enough to purchase tickets.  That is something special, especially when they are already outlapping WWE ticket sales for each promotion's respective debut at the UBS Arena in Long Island.  New York has always been a market that reacts to an "event", something that is worth their time.  AEW is certainly being seen as just that.  The ball is in their court and having a great show this week will be another massive feather in their cap after after the recent talent acquisitions and sellouts in Newark and Chicago.
